<p>The meteoric rise in the valuations of bitcoin (BTC) and other Crypto assets has become a ubiquitous topic at dinner table discussions. The whole asset class surged by more than 15 times in value this year, dwarfing the low to high teen returns generated by the traditional asset classes. Cryptocurrencies as an asset class is gaining mainstream adoption at a dizzying pace as evidenced by the steep growth in trading volumes and wallet users, however, there is a growing concern among a few factions that cryptocurrencies are a bubble in the making and ominous comparisons to the 1600s 'Tulip bubble' have been made. Whether cryptocurrencies can truly transform and revolutionize the way in which value is transferred between individuals by disrupting the incumbent infrastructure of centralised banks is something that would take at least a few years to unfold.</p><p>This is the first one in a series of 10-11 insightful articles on the foundational concepts of cryptocurrencies that we plan to publish in the coming weeks. </p>
