Seventeen companies revised their forecasts, and one made initial forecasts. In terms of our scoring system, the ratio of positive to negative 'scores' was 5:11, with <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/jxtg-holdings-inc" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:638:1" rel="noopener">JXTG (5020 JP) </a>being the largest negative-scoring company and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/maxvalu-nishinihon-co-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:13743:1" rel="noopener">Maxvalu Nishinihon (8287 JP)</a> being unchanged. Forty-seven new cases were confirmed yesterday, taking the total in the metropolis to 259. Tokyo will implement a 'stay-at-home-policy' this weekend. Surrounding prefectures have encouraged their residents not to travel into the city over the weekend. Amusement parks that had reopened last weekend will now close their doors.</p><p><strong>ODD NEWS</strong> - In other 'news', the Sapporo Board of Education is debating whether to allow students to wear face masks that are not white. In the past, many schools have mandated that children can only have black hair, forcing some children whose hair is naturally lighter to dye their hair black to conform to the 'norm'.  </p>

Until the number of daily announcements becomes excessive, we shall focus on companies with a market capitalisation fo over ¥50 billion.</p><p><strong>SCORING METHODOLOGY</strong> - <strong>Results Scores</strong> are calculated using the most recent eight quarters of company data for Revenues, Operating Income and Operating Margin and, for each, measure the rate, degree and consistency of change. The score has a maximum of +30 and a minimum of -30 for each period. The <strong>Forecast/Revision Score</strong> is based on both Annual and Interim period company forecasts and compares changes from previous forecasts as well as against the trailing twelve-month (TTM) or previous first-half results, with annual forecasts being double-weighted. This score also has a maximum of +30 and a minimum of -30 for each period.  The combined<strong> Results &amp; Revision Score (RRS)</strong> is the average of the<strong> Results Score</strong> and the<strong> Forecasts/Revision Score</strong>. This downward trend is in accord with the <strong>Cabinet Office Business Conditions Leading Indicator</strong> which reached a new post-GFC low in November, before the impact of the Coronavirus.</p><div class="content-highlight"><p><strong>Note that our Scoring of both Results and Forecasts/Revisions has a strong momentum component which may lead reported earnings which tend to be a lagging indicator, hence the tighter correlations with the Leading Indicator and the market.</strong></p></div>

<p>Despite EAFE’s YTD outperformance relative to EM, EAFE and EM returns have generally been equal since August, shown by the stalemate in the EAFE vs. EM ratio. The U.S. dollar (DXY) is currently trading near support within the 16-17 month uptrend channel. Technicals suggest the most likely scenario is for the DXY uptrend to continue and for support to hold -- which would likely result in EAFE reasserting as leadership.  In this publication we highlight attractive investment themes and individual ideas across developed markets, with special attention given to Japan, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland.</p>
