Compared to the thirty-five years to 2015, the last five years have been a period of benign calm in the USD/JPY exchange rate, aided and abetted by the action of central banks to eliminate interest rates and the functioning of the bond markets. This analysis will yield some surprising results, including the positive US Dollar correlation of <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/nippon-express-co-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:18582:1" rel="noopener">Nippon Express (9062 JP)</a>, while <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/nikon-corp" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:7117:1" rel="noopener">Nikon (7731 JP)</a> is negatively correlated. <hr>• THE FOREIGN CURRENCY TRANSLATION ADJUSTMENT •<figure class="editor-figure mceNonEditable"><img src="https://static-prod.smartkarma.com/images/media/000/145/502/original/2020-07-12_13-22-12.png?1594527750" class="editor-image img-responsive" data-smartkarma-image-id="145502"></figure><div class="content-caption">Source • Japan Analytics</div>FCTA - The second part is perhaps more abstruse, however but is a more accurate estimation of the actual currency risk embedded in the business model.  The Foreign Currency Translation Adjustment (FCTA) is part of Other Comprehensive Income and has been disclosed in Japanese GAAP-based balance sheets and income statements since 2001 and 2011, respectively to measure the extent of each company's global business and the embedded currency risk. The correlation of the aggregate FCTA for all non-financial companies is, as would be expected, reasonably tight. As these amounts are directly deducted from Net Assets for companies adopting JGAAP and from Shareholders' Equity for those companies reporting under SEC or IFRS standards, the impact on valuations cannot be ignored. For example, the decline in the US dollar from ¥123 to ¥101 in 2016 resulted in a six-quarter ¥53 trillion negative FCTA adjustment, 65% of the gap between Net Income and CITC over that period.<figure class="editor-figure mceNonEditable"><img src="https://static-prod.smartkarma.com/images/media/000/145/273/original/2020-07-10_16-08-25.png?1594364929" class="editor-image img-responsive" data-smartkarma-image-id="145273"></figure><div class="content-caption">Source • Japan Analytics</div>CITC &amp; NET INCOME - Comprehensive Income adds a series of adjustments to Net Income to reflect as-yet-unrealised changes from currency translations, securities valuation differences, pensions, and deferred hedges. These adjustments are subsequently 'recycled' as and when realisations occur. In aggregate over the last seven years, Comprehensive Income has exceeded Net Income by a cumulative ¥56 trillion or 7%. However, as Comprehensive Income is inherently a more volatile data series, it is eschewed or overlooked by most analysts despite the direct impact on Shareholders' Equity. Nevertheless, Comprehensive Income illustrates that, as a result of increased globalisation and investments in marketable securities, the underlying earnings of Japanese corporates have become riskier than is implied by Net Income. The company specifically stated that it would not be raising equity to fund the purchase. Bloomberg had reported discussions between the two companies on Aug 13 and even noted a potential purchase price around EUR1bn. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2020.

LARGE CAP RESULTS &amp; REVISION SCORES - The final instalment of our series of reviews of Japan's most recent earnings and revisions announcements covers the Results &amp; Revision Scores for Japan's 785 larger capitalisation companies with a market capitalisation of over ¥100b.
In the DETAIL section below we look at:- 
<ul>
<li>The 30 top and bottom-ranked companies by Results &amp; Revision Score as well as the top and bottom thirty ranked by change in score over the last quarter and provide brief comments on companies and topics of note.</li>
<li>By comparing Results Scores and Forecast/Revision Scores, we sort companies into'Optimists', 'Pessimists', 'Increasingly Optimistic' and 'Increasingly Pessimistic' categories.</li>
<li>As shown above, the relationship between the Results &amp; Revision Score (RRS) and our Relative Price Score (RPS) for each company and divide the large-cap universe into four 'quadrants' - 'Contrarian Buy' (Low RRS &amp; Low RPS) , 'Contrarian Sell' (High RRS &amp; High RPS), 'Peak Growth' (High RRS &amp; Low RPS) and 'Ex-Growth/Turnaround'  (Low RRS &amp; High RPS), highlighting the outliers in each quadrant.

<li>In the two 'Contrarian' quadrants, the market is aligned with the current earnings momentum of the companies suggesting opportunities exist only for those willing or brave enough to take a contrarian view. </li>
<li>For 'Peak Growth', the market is calling for a downturn in momentum that has yet to be reflected in quarterly earnings. Where the cycle is more prolonged than expected, there are often opportunities for short-term rebounds in what are normally relatively-inexpensive companies.</li>
<li>The 'Ex-Growth' quadrant often consists of former 'Contrarian Sell's where the market is reluctant to acknowledge that the cycle has turned. This quadrant can also contain 'Turnarounds' - formerly 'Contrarian Buys' where the market is correctly anticipating a change in fortunes.   </li>

🇯🇵 Japan • Winter Large Cap Results & Revision Scores - Contrarian Buys & Sells/​Peak & Ex-Growth

Japan

ADEKA CORPORATION manufactures basic chemicals and foodstuffs.  The Company's products include resin products, insulators, and processed fat/oil products.

KANEKA CORPORATION manufactures and sells a wide range of synthetic resins, and chemicals for foods and medicines.  The Company operates sales/manufacturing subsidiaries in Belgium, Malaysia, Singapore, and US.

Teijin Ltd manufactures polyester and other fibers including nylon, acetate, aramid, and polyvinyl chloride for apparel and industrial materials.  Teijin also makes polyester films used in advanced magnetic media and electronics equipment through a joint venture with Dupont.  The Company also produces pharmaceuticals, medical products, and information system equipment.

LINTEC Corporation manufactures and markets adhesive products and paper.  The Company's pressure-sensitive adhesives are used in a wide range of applications such as labeling, sealing, and packaging, as well as marking and window filming in the architecture and automotive industries.  Lintec also produces packaging, labeling, and printing machines.

FUJIMI INCORPORATED manufactures silicon wafer polishing materials.  The Company also produces mirror surface finishing materials and other related products.

ZEON CORPORATION produces synthetic rubbers, latex, and resins.  The Company's products are used as tires and other auto parts, and materials for electronic components.

OSAKA SODA CO., LTD. is a major producer of caustic soda and other chemical products. The Company markets its products in North America and Europe.

NIPPON SHOKUBAI CO., LTD. manufactures and sells basic and fine chemicals, synthetic resins, and catalysts.  The Company's products include acrylic acid, super absorbent polymers, and automobile catalysts.  Nippon Shokubai exports to Germany, US, and Singapore.

Ube Industries, Ltd. produces and sells chemical products such as nylon resins, plastics and synthetic rubbers, fine chemicals, and pharmaceutical bulk compounds and intermediates. The Company also manufactures cement, construction materials, and machineries.

C. Uyemura & Co., Ltd. manufactures and sells plating chemicals.  The Company also manufactures plating machinery.  C. Uyemura markets its products in North America and Asia.

Fufeng Group Limited manufactures corn-based bio-chemical products utilizing fermentation technology. The Company's products include glutamic acid and xanthan gum.

Nanning Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. develops, manufactures, and markets organic and inorganic industrial chemicals.  The Company's products include chlorine and alkali products, pesticides, and disinfectants.

The Company also provides water treatment equipment and chemicals to commercial and industrial entities. Hawkins services customers located in the Midwest United States.

DIC Corp. is a chemical company that specializes in printing inks, organic pigments, and thermosetting resins.  The Company also manufactures polymers, specialty plastics and compounds, and others which include building materials, pressure-sensitive adhesives materials, and biochemicals.
