On November 6th, <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/623" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:623:1">NTT (Nippon Telegraph &amp; Telephone) (9432 JP)</a><a href="http://www.ntt.co.jp/news2018/1811e/181106a.html" target="_blank">announced</a> a ¥150 billion buyback program, and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/1089" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:1089:1">NTT Docomo Inc (9437 JP)</a><a href="https://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/english/info/media_center/pr/2018/1106_00.html" target="_blank">announced</a> that its very large ¥600 billion buyback program presented days before would be done through a single below-market-price Tender Offer where NTT was expected to be the only seller.  That left NTT buying shares on market and NTT Docomo buying shares off-market in the immediate future. 
The Tender Offer went through <a href="https://www.nttdocomo.co.jp/english/info/media_center/pr/2018/1208_00.html" target="_blank">as planned</a> (though NTT sold a tiny trifle less than expected). 
On January 7th, NTT <a href="http://www.ntt.co.jp/news2019/1901e/190107a.html" target="_blank">announced</a> it had repurchased 8.4mm shares for ¥38.8 billion, leaving only ¥15.35 billion to repurchase in this program. That is worth about 7-8 trading days of buying. The buyback is therefore almost done. 
A hint as to the future came in a Nikkei article in December. It may be many months before we see more NTT on-market buybacks.

ONWARD AND OUT - <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/18379" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:18379:1">ZOZO (3092 JP)</a>, formerly Start Today, has been the sixth-most-traded large capitalisation stock over the last ten trading days after <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/14502" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:14502:1">Benefit One (2412 JP)</a>, <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/14750" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:14750:1">Rizap (2928 JP)</a>, <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/11747" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:11747:1">Takeda Pharmaceutical (4502 JP)</a>, <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/7611" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:7611:1">Hoshizaki (6465 JP)</a>, and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/8467" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:8467:1">Workman Co Ltd (7564 JP)</a>. According to Nikkei XTECH, on 25th December apparel maker <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/11370" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:11370:1">Onward (8016 JP)</a> suspended selling of its products on ZOZOTOWN and will leave the platform altogether. Although Onward products are estimated to account for less than 3% of total transactions on the site, there are concerns that other apparel makers will follow suit as a result of the emerging direct competition on the site from ZOZO's private label. Since reaching our 4.0 'Overbought' threshold on 9th July 2018, ZOZO shares have corrected by 57% - the worst performance of any large cap from that date - as concerns mounted over the private brand strategy and the behaviour of CEO Yusaku Maezawa.  Since bottoming on 4th January, the shares have risen by 18% following positive comments from the CEO about sales over the New Year holiday period.

PRIVATE-LABEL STRETCH GOALS- The 'teething problems' of ZOZO entering the private-label apparel business have been well-documented by <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/profiles/2415" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="accounts:2415">Michael Causton</a> in a recent <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/insights/zozo-teething-problems-for-private-brand-and-signs-of-hubris" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="insights:26266">Insight</a> on Smartkarma. ONWARD AND OUT - ZOZO (3092 JP), formerly Start Today, has been the sixth-most-traded large capitalisation stock over the last ten trading days after Benefit One (2412 JP), Rizap (2928 JP), Takeda Pharmaceutical (4502 JP), Hoshizaki (6465 JP), and Workman Co Ltd (7564 JP). According to Nikkei XTECH, on 25th December apparel maker Onward (8016 JP) suspended selling of its products on ZOZOTOWN and will leave the platform altogether. Although Onward products are estimated to account for less than 3% of total transactions on the site, there are concerns that other apparel makers will follow suit as a result of the emerging direct competition on the site from ZOZO's private label. The Japanese telecom market was more volatile in 2018 than anticipated. However, <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/profiles/1917" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="accounts:1917">Chris Hoare</a> remains broadly positive on the sector for 2019. While pressure on the revenue line is intensifying, we do do not expect a price war to break out. In fact, we look for volatility to ease as the year progresses. Operators point to opex reductions and handset subsidy reductions to offset revenue weakness. We think that earnings are likely to surprise on to the upside. DOWN, DOWN, DEEPER &amp; DOWN - Japanese equities were as unfashionable as the venerable 'Quo' in 2018, although all of the year's decline occurred in the fourth quarter. Our All-Market-Composite fell by 16.1%, only three sectors - REITs, Utilities and Telecoms - rose and four sectors - Metals, Building Materials, Technology Hardware and Machinery - fell by more than 30%. All of the sixteen outperforming sectors are domestically-orientated, and only two - Other Commercial Products and Other Consumer Products are manufacturing sectors. With no end in sight to the Bank of Japan's accommodation, interest rates remained at historically-depressed levels and provided no respite to financial sectors. Construction and Building Materials declined as the pre-Olympic construction order cycle peaked out, although Real Estate outperformed as office vacancy rates and rents reached three-decade new lows and new highs, respectively. The largest fourth-quarter declines were in the Energy, Internet, Information Technology and Commercial Services sectors and now offer some attractive stock-specific opportunities.

As the colder winter weather is felt and the icy blast of industry tariff cuts continues to chill sentiment, we seek some respite (at least mentally) in the warmer climes of Okinawa. Okinawa Cellular is a unique company. It's a small cap telecom network operator in Japan with a focus on the sub-tropical islands of Okinawa Prefecture. As part of the KDDI group, the company benefits from its parent's economies of scale, but with its local presence, it also benefits from being the hometown hero. Because the stock is relatively small, from an investment perspective it runs into liquidity constraints that the other telcos do not have, so it's a different type of investment but one that we think is worth looking at. Over the past 12 months Okinawa Cellular's stock has fallen by 12.3%, but over the past year the stock has delivered a return in the middle of its peer group and has outperformed the broad TOPIX by about 5.5%. Like most telcos, Okinawa Cellular is also ramping its dividend payments, and the current yield is about 3.5%.
