Investors started dumping Chinese e-vapor stocks following the announcement of <a target="_blank">draft amendments to the Tobacco Monopoly Law</a>, if approved could extend the law's jurisdiction to e-cigarettes. As a result, <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/rlx-technology-inc" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:31113:1" rel="noopener">RLX Technology Inc (RLX US)</a>’s share price plunged 48% while <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/smoore-international" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:28241:1" rel="noopener">Smoore International (6969 HK)</a>’s (less dependent on China) fell by 23%. Meanwhile, the lock-up period for RLX’s pre-IPO holders’ expiries on 21st July 2021 possibly leading to additional selling pressure in the short term.

In our weekly HK Connect Flow series, we aim to highlight key stocks and sectors which the mainland investors traded via the southbound Hong Kong Connect, as analyzed by our proprietary data engine.Since the opening of Hong Kong Connect scheme in 2014, southbound Chinese money started to play an increasingly important role in the Hong Kong stock market. In a Hong Kong exchange report released in July 2019, the exchange highlighted that flows from mainland China accounted for 12% of the total trading volume in the market and is ahead of the US investors' 10% and UK investors' 7% share respectively. We split the stocks eligible for the Hong Kong Connect trade into three groups: HSCEI component stocks, stocks with a market capitalization between USD 1 billion and USD 5 billion, and stocks with a market capitalization between USD 500 million and USD 1 billion.In this insight, we will highlight inflows into Tencent Holdings Limited (700 HK), as well as outflows from Meituan (3690 HK), and Smoore International Holdings Limited (6969 HK).

On 1 March, Hang Seng Indexes (HSIL) announced the conclusions of the market consultation on the "Proposal to enhance the Hang Seng Index as regards continuing to serve as the most representative and important benchmark of the Hong Kong stock market".The main takeaways are an increase in the number of <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/hong-kong-hang-seng-index" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:22899:1" rel="noopener">Hong Kong Hang Seng Index (HSI INDEX)</a> constituents to 80 by mid-2022 and ultimately to 100, balanced representation across 7 Industry group with a market coverage of not less than 50%, a 3 month minimum listing history requirement, a representation of 20-25 Hong Kong companies in the index, and a rationalisation in the weighting cap to 8% for all stocks (including Secondary Listings and WVR Securities).There is no timeline of how HSIL intends to reach the 80 constituent target count by mid-2022 or to the 100 constituents beyond that. This means that the implementation of the changes using the new methodology will begin at the June 2021 review and conclude at the March 2022 review.With the results of the March 2021 review scheduled to be announced post market close tomorrow (26 February), the review will follow the current methodology. But with the leeway afforded to the index committee to decide on the stocks to be included/ excluded, stocks could be selected based on whether they will make the cut for inclusion based on the future methodology. This will also reduce the turnover at future reviews.The <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/hong-kong-hang-seng-index" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:22899:1" rel="noopener">Hong Kong Hang Seng Index (HSI INDEX)</a> already has 52 constituents and we expect this to increase further at the March review.
