A 2.4-2.6% rebound in benchmark Brent and WTI crude prices Wednesday (February 14) in a week of mildly bearish short-term and long-term indicators from stocks and supply fundamentals supports our argument that oil remains in the grip of the frenzy dominating world's financial markets. Oil's bounce matched a smart recovery in stock markets across Europe and the US, and was extending in Asia Thursday as the region's equities took a lead from the West. The recent fears of inflation and its impact on economic growth aside, global demand projections for oil in 2018 remain strong. However, we might find crude caught in a tug-of- war between the mop-up of the global surplus underway due to the OPEC/non-OPEC cuts and fears of U.S. shale resurgence once the financial markets stabilise.

MTS was founded in 1989 at the request of Morgan Grenfell Investment Services Limited (MGIS), the ERISA arm of Morgan Grenfell Asset Management (subsequently Deutsche Asset Management), by Peter Beuttell, a Portfolio Manager at MGIS between 1987 and 1989. 

Peter is a qualified Chartered Accountant and self-taught market technician with over 30 years experience.  At MGIS, Peter managed money in European, Australasian and Far East markets for US clients, such as American Airlines and American Petrofina.  He achieved first quartile perfomance on their behalf by blending fundamental and technical analysis in his investment decision-making.  

After an initial focus on the EAFE markets (Europe, Australasia and Far East), the company has recently expanded its coverage to include the Americas, thanks to the recently-completed two-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership with the University of Plymouth.  The resulting software – the Technical Overlay Program (TOP) – allows fund managers to access an immediate Technical view on any market, sector, stock, bond yield, currency or commodity within their selected universe.

MTS Research consists of a team of five based in Penzance and London.

With our post-2009 wave counts nearing completion (and acceptably complete in NASDAQ 100), we have been watching nervously to see if the S&amp;P would produce a sharp sell-off along the lines of Q2 2000 or Q3 2007, providing an initial warning that it might have begun top-building.  The recent decline certainly qualifies.

<ul><li>Crude was officially in correction mode at the end of Friday, February 9, following a week's rout led by mayhem in the global financial markets.</li><li>However, benchmark Brent as well as WTI futures remain firmly backwardated, a sign of a tightly balanced market.</li><li>The connection between inflation, economic headwinds, slowing economic growth and deceleration in global oil demand growth is too circuitous for the crude markets to have joined the dots. </li><li>A return to tracking fundamentals is a given, but that is unlikely to happen until the financial markets emerge from the latest turmoil.</li></ul>
