<li>It has been an interesting year and short interest has varied a lot across countries, sectors and stocks. We look at changes in Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.</li>
<li>Shorts have soared in Korea following the resumption of short selling, while short interest has increased in the other countries too.</li>
<li>Ping An Insurance and BYD had the biggest short covering, while China Merchants Bank saw the largest increase in shorts over the year.</li>

Shorts have soared in Korea following the resumption of short selling, while short interest has increased in the other countries too.
Ping An Insurance and BYD had the biggest short covering, while China Merchants Bank saw the largest increase in shorts over the year.

In 2-week period, China A50 index future has registered more than 1800 average daily contracts, which have over US$ 390mn nominal value. This represents around 5% run-rate of <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/singapore-exchange-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:1047:1" rel="noopener">SGX (SGX SP)</a> FTSE A50 future contract. We have long argued that China A50 future index marks a significant milestone for <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/hong-kong-exchanges-clearing" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:490:1" rel="noopener">HKEX (388 HK)</a> to diversify its earnings stream away from heavy reliance on cash equity market. In long-term, we estimate the derivative business contribution to HKEx revenue will likely grow to 25% from current 16%.</li>

Lower investment income led to a 3% miss on revenues, but this was offset by better cost management. The revenue stream has the detail break-down as the following: 30% from cash equity market, 17% from derivative market, 7% from commodity market, 39% from clearing and settlement, 5% from technology and 1% from other. Stock Connect remains a bright spot, its revenue has grown 26% year-over-year, or 33% quarter-over-quarter. </li>

The ADT for the first ten months of 2021 was up 41 per cent from the same period last year. Although China market is clouded by recent Beijing's crackdown of big tech, we still think  HKEx will play a key role on offshore China listings. We forecast <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/hong-kong-exchanges-clearing" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:490:1" rel="noopener">HKEX (388 HK)</a> Securities ADT of HK$240bn in FY 21 (excluding Stock Connect Northbound volume)  and remain bullish on <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/hong-kong-exchanges-clearing" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:490:1" rel="noopener">HKEX (388 HK)</a>  and have TP HKD 550. </li>
