<p>The valuation of pre-revenue biotechnology companies is, at best, an imprecise exercise. The traditional valuation tools (DCF, peer company comparisons, M&amp;A valuations) still apply, but require some modifications to reflect the unique circumstances. One tool is to consider the company's valuation in the context of the "step-up" from its last funding round to the pre-money valuation for the IPO. The company's pipeline is cutting edge and early stage, but comes with relatively high risk. A license and collaboration agreement with multinational <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/abbvie-inc" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:1135:1" rel="noopener">Abbvie Inc (ABBV US)</a> provides validation and non-dilutive funding. The management team is experienced and accomplished. The venture investors are credible; and the patent estate has a long life.</p><p>This Insight provides an overview of the business, including some initial thoughts on valuation. Zai Lab is a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company which started to generate revenue from sales of commercialized products from 2018. In 1H20, revenue was primarily derived from the sales of both ZEJULA and Optune in Hong Kong and China.</p>

In 1H20, revenue was primarily derived from the sales of both ZEJULA and Optune in Hong Kong and China.
The H shares will be priced on 22 September (Tuesday) and are scheduled for listing on 28 September.  Zai Lab will price its H-shares at a discount to its ADSs to entice investors to participate in the secondary listing. Overall, we think that Zai Lab pricing its H-shares around a 2% discount to its ADSs will be reasonable.
