<p>B-shares - remember them?</p>
<p>Created in 1992 to attract foreign investors,  their introduction, which followed the launch of A-shares, was a precursor to wider market access reforms for foreigners, as China integrated itself with the global economy.</p>
<p>Fast forward and years of market liberalisation provide foreign investors access to 3,000+ companies with A-shares. As a result, the combined market value of B shares accounts for less than 0.2% of the capitalisation of A-shares issued by companies in Shanghai. More importantly, the average daily trading volume for B-shares is ~0.1% of its peers.</p>
<p>Over the last decade, the HSI is up 30%. The Shanghai Exchange is up 18%, whereas the Shanghai B-share index is down 22%. For Shenzhen, the main index is up 70% versus 37% for the B-share index. </p>

<p>B shares have become a sort of zombie market for foreigners. </p>
<p>The authorities <em>could</em> merge the B and A shares, which would result in a spike in the Bs, given their historical trading discount.</p>

<p>B-shares closed yesterday at HK$5.49/share. Yet the H-shares - in which the B-shares will be converted into - are trading at HK$6.70/share.</p>

On the 29 January 2021, Shandong Chenming Paper A (000488 CH)/(1812 HK) announced the proposed listing of its domestic (B-shares) on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, as H-shares. The circular is here, and shareholders approved the transfer on the 9 March.
B-shares closed yesterday at HK$5.49/share. Yet the H-shares - in which the B-shares will be converted into - are trading at HK$6.70/share.

<p>Spreads were mixed this week with 48 out of 100 observed pair spreads narrower and 52 wider. The big winner on the week was Financials with spreads 119bp narrower on average. Banks and Big Insurance generally narrowed. </p>

<p>Overall, it was a lackluster performance, and one cannot say spreads won't move wider, but at 40% discount (and an arithmetic average upside of 87% for each liquid H to reach parity with its A), this spreads <em>are</em> wide.</p>

BYD (1211 HK) ended the week down 1.1% after rising in the first four days, and the shares even fell Friday despite announcing Thursday after the close that production was up 125%yoy in February, and sales +106%. BYD is down 20+% in four weeks. 

Fuyao Glass Industry Group (3606 HK) was only up small in sympathy, outperforming auto names, and significantly outperforming glass names across other sectors. Thursday saw significant selling of glass names. 
Southbound was a net seller of nearly HK$585mm after selling HK$2bn in the previous two weeks. Only Fuyao Glass Industry Group (3606 HK) saw decent Southbound buying on a net basis (+HK$190mm). BYD was the big net sell at -HK$673mm.

Quiddity Weekly H/A: Financials Outpace Everything Else: Marketwide 87% Upside to A-Share Parity

Sciclone Pharmaceuticals / Equity Capital Markets

<p>SciClone Pharma, a pharmaceutical company with a focus on sales of oncology and infectious disease drugs in China, raised HKD 2,039 million (USD 262m) from its global offering and will list on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Wed, Mar 3rd.</p>
<p>In our previous note, we discussed that the company has a long history but has a heavy reliance on a single drug Zadaxin which has dubious efficacy as it has not managed to obtain FDA approval for its otherwise approved indication in China. The company tried to expand the indication based on its ability to enhance the immune system to fight against diseases. The company's near-term revenue driver mainly comes from the consolidation of the sales from Pfizer products after the transfer of rights. However, we think the products from both Pfizer and Baxter are not attractive overall. The products from Baxter have been in the market for decades. Quality of the management team is mediocre with a focus on sales experience and not R&amp;D experience. So is the quality of financial investors which are mostly domestic private equity funds.</p>
<p>In this note, we look at the updates since our last note. We were bearish with the deal and with the recent correction in the market, we think there is a chance that the deal goes under water post listing.</p>

SciClone Pharma, a pharmaceutical company with a focus on sales of oncology and infectious disease drugs in China, raised HKD 2,039 million (USD 262m) from its global offering and will list on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Wed, Mar 3rd.
In our previous note, we discussed that the company has a long history but has a heavy reliance on a single drug Zadaxin which has dubious efficacy as it has not managed to obtain FDA approval for its otherwise approved indication in China. The company tried to expand the indication based on its ability to enhance the immune system to fight against diseases. The company's near-term revenue driver mainly comes from the consolidation of the sales from Pfizer products after the transfer of rights. However, we think the products from both Pfizer and Baxter are not attractive overall. The products from Baxter have been in the market for decades. Quality of the management team is mediocre with a focus on sales experience and not R&amp;D experience. So is the quality of financial investors which are mostly domestic private equity funds.
In this note, we look at the updates since our last note. We were bearish with the deal and with the recent correction in the market, we think there is a chance that the deal goes under water post listing.
