We provide a historical perspective that often reveals, through our long-term charts, how price patterns often repeat themselves over time.

Energy stocks may be nearing a climax top while gold and gold stocks are showing bullish signals after several months of dismal performance. Traders should avoid energy exposure and buy gold and gold stocks for better potential performance.However, make no mistake, any gold rally should be treated as a tactical bull rather than a secular bull. The gold-to-CRB and cyclically sensitive copper-to-gold ratios are signaling a reflationary regime. Long-term investors should therefore seek exposure to cyclically sensitive base metal and other commodities over the shiny yellow metal for better returns.

Additionally, Europe’s STOXX 50 and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng are on the cusp of short-term breakouts, while the major indexes in China (Shanghai Composite &amp; CSI 300) are currently breaking above short-term resistance... see chart below. Considering the absence of breakdowns and the fact that market dynamics remain largely positive, our overall constructive outlook remains appropriate.

While we are no gold bugs, the breakout could be a technical signal of an intermediate bullish phase for precious metals.We conclude that the upside breakout in gold is constructive for the precious metals complex. Moreover, we have laid out a scenario offered by Jurrien Timmer at Fidelity of how gold prices could go parabolic by 2023.In addition, the price action of the precious metals has important macro implications for other asset classes. In this environment, investors should focus on stocks that can continue to grow earnings in the current environment. This means companies that can pass on their rising input costs and cyclical sectors and industries that can benefit from strong sales growth.
