<p>On its Hon Hai Tech Day 2020, Foxconn presented its MIH platform, an open-source platform that it hopes will streamline the process of developing EVs. According to Hon Hai’s presentation, the platform is developed to replicate features of Tesla’s EVs but also allows third-party contribution to further develop the design and system. Foxconn wants to be the “Android of EVs” while allowing Tesla to remain the “iPhone of EVs”. In this insight, we look at Foxconn’s efforts in the development of EVs, and what this means for related players.</p><p><em>We like Foxconn’s platform for being open source, and it looks like an interesting move that would help accelerate EV adoption globally. Though we cannot say with certainty whether the platform will be successful or not until it is tested and tried, we note that if Foxconn’s MIH platform becomes successful, then Tesla’s EV leadership status might be threatened. Overall, we consider this to be a good move by Foxconn, given the declining smartphone market and growing positive EV momentum. </em></p><p>We go through the details below.</p>

Among the areas of collaboration announced were platform sharing, cooperation on R&amp;D and connected services and collaboration on purchasing. These are all relatively standard fare for these alliances and mergers and by and large end up achieving little in our opinion. We do feel that collaboration on R&amp;D makes sense for automakers in general as we believe scale will be increasingly important going forward, however, that is only if the collaboration is genuine and wholehearted. This alliance has the faint whiff of Honda needing to show something on the autonomous front and lacking ideas for how to improve profitability for their North American automotive operations. In these scenarios, alliances and M&amp;A tend to be the default choice once you have run out of ideas and they rarely work.</p><p></p><p><strong> </strong></p>

<p><strong>NEV IN JAPAN</strong> - Japan has a reputation for being the world's leading market for finding listed companies with negative Enterprise Value (NEV). Based on a sample of 842,133 traded months for the 3,826 currently-listed non-financial companies in our universe since 1993, NEV-traded months represent 8%. One thousand and eleven companies have spent at least one month with a negative EV and the average NEV 'period' is just over two years.  The number of NEV companies has varied over the last thirty years, from only one in 1994 (Sanyu Construction 1841 JP) to a peak of 437 in 2009 - 15.4% of the universe. In the last two years, the percentage has doubled to 10% or 366 companies, most of which are small-cap.</p>

<p><strong>50 BPS</strong> -Accordingly, the aggregate (inverted) value of NEV stocks is ¥2.5 trillion or just 50 basis points of the aggregate of the universe. Nevertheless, the current value is at the upper end of the thirty-year range. We have excluded four non-financial companies - Z Holdings, Rakuten, Japan Post, and Sony - as they have financial subsidiaries on their balance sheets.</p>

NEV IN JAPAN - Japan has a reputation for being the world's leading market for finding listed companies with negative Enterprise Value (NEV). Based on a sample of 842,133 traded months for the 3,826 currently-listed non-financial companies in our universe since 1993, NEV-traded months represent 8%. One thousand and eleven companies have spent at least one month with a negative EV and the average NEV 'period' is just over two years.  The number of NEV companies has varied over the last thirty years, from only one in 1994 (Sanyu Construction 1841 JP) to a peak of 437 in 2009 - 15.4% of the universe. In the last two years, the percentage has doubled to 10% or 366 companies, most of which are small-cap.

50 BPS -Accordingly, the aggregate (inverted) value of NEV stocks is ¥2.5 trillion or just 50 basis points of the aggregate of the universe. Nevertheless, the current value is at the upper end of the thirty-year range. We have excluded four non-financial companies - Z Holdings, Rakuten, Japan Post, and Sony - as they have financial subsidiaries on their balance sheets.



NEV 'BUYS' - Brief periods, and occasionally extended, when higher-quality companies dip into NEV are often good long-term buying opportunities as shown above with Persol (2181 JP), Toei Animation (4816 JP)  and Hakuhodo DY (2433 JP).
