Our process begins by organizing the universe of actively traded stocks into discrete sectors, then into industry groups. We then apply our technical and quantitative tools to identify developing price trends. Once attractive trends are identified within a selected sector or group, we screen for individual stocks which we believe offer the best risk/reward profile. We provide a historical perspective that often reveals, through our long-term charts, how price patterns often repeat themselves over time.

Risk-on signals remain the dominant theme. US Equity Strategy: Mid-Caps Breaking Out, Are Small-Caps Next? Buying Energy, Financials, Materials

Last week's FOMC announcement was more hawkish than expected, and the market took the news in stride. Market dynamics have improved significantly since the announcement, which has us inching toward an outright bullish outlook; we are just waiting for price breakouts from cyclical areas including small-caps (IWM), Financials (XLF), and Energy (XOP).Charts highlighted: COP, EOG, DVN, CLR, FANG, MRO, XEC, COG, AR, MUR, USB, PNC, FITB, KEY, RF, CMA, SIVB, WAL, EWBC, ZION, PACW, UMPQ, FHB, and CATY.

10-Yr Treasury Yield Breaking Out; Downgrading U.S. Consumer Staples and Utilities To Underweight

US Treasury (10 Yr Generic) / Technical Analysis

This is encouraging, however we are still neutral yet constructive overall. As we noted last week, we need to see the 10-year Treasury yield breach, and hold above, 1.45%, as well as sustained price improvement by small-caps (i.e., IWM above $234.50) before we can declare a new broad-based bull market.

Currently leading the S&amp;P 500 higher in terms of RS are Technology, Services, Facebook (FB), Amazon (AMZN), and Procter &amp; Gamble (PG). If this were a bull market, (1) PG would likely NOT be listed here as leadership, and (2) we would expect to see participation broaden out to Discretionary (RCD), Transportation (IYT), banks (KBE), Industrials (XLI), and small-caps (IWM). All of these areas are still consolidating below meaningful resistance, and we continue to believe upside is likely to be muted as long as this rings true.In today’s report we highlight attractive Groups and stocks within Transportation, Materials, and Services:

We draw several similarities in today’s report, and we continue to believe upside is likely to be muted from here barring additional positive developments.

While the S&amp;P 500 has hit marginal new highs, price action of the S&amp;P 500 and the price and RS of several Sectors/subsectors is similar to the periods leading up to the October 2018 and May 2019 breakdowns. We draw several similarities in today’s report, and we continue to believe upside is likely to be muted from here barring additional positive developments.
