A notable limiting factor is the shortage of forecasts being made. Of these 2,464 companies representing ¥438 trillion of market cap, just 1,119 have issued annual forecasts for the current year, and 583 have made interim forecasts. Of all listed companies, one-third by market value are currently unable to see ahead twelve months and only 16% by value and 23% by number are prepared to look forward four-and-a-half months. <p>Harmonic Drive posted 4Q results which were slightly mixed as revenue missed consensus slightly, but the company beat on OP and avoided a loss which was positive. While the company did not offer FY guidance, it at least provided 1Q guidance which is a helpful indicator. HDS is calling for ¥9.5bn in revenue and a slim profit of ¥200m with this backed up by 4Q orders which hit ¥8.9bn, up from the bottom of ¥5.6bn but a far cry from the peak of ¥22.1bn. All in all we considered the results and guidance to be positive, but against the context of the stock price we feel they demonstrate that risk-reward is skewed extremely heavily to the downside.</p>

<p>Keyence reported FY numbers in line with consensus as OP of ¥277.6bn was marginally above consensus’ ¥277.0bn. Revenue was more encouraging as the ¥551.8bn result was 0.8% above consensus’ ¥547.5bn. OP was hurt by increased SG&amp;A expenses. A slight encouragement was an effective increase in the dividend as Keyence maintained its ¥100 payout despite the Nov 21 stock split, effectively increasing the dividend from ¥200 to ¥300 (on pre-split like for like) and forecasting ¥400 for this year (¥200 post-split). Of course, this could still be increased but it is a step in the right direction and implies a payout ratio that will probably be over 20% this year. That is not high, but it is better than what you might imagine given Keyence’s miserly reputation.</p>

Taking Stock of the Almost Excessive Alpha Generation From TOPIX-Nikkei Skew Trades

<p>On Thursday we highlighted a number of stock pairs that had seen extreme levels of relative performance dislocations, speculating that this was due to relative value unwinds that were being rushed for completion prior to the long weekend. This morning the skews are reversing and with Nikkei now outperforming Topix (+02.7% vs. -0.87% at the time of this writing) we believe this opportunity is being realised quickly. Our thoughts on next steps below.</p>
