After a somewhat euphoric start to September, with some Japanese bank stocks recovering as much as 20% from their mid-August lows on a global wave of ‘Value over Momentum’ buying, we expect the market to return sharply to reality in October, leaving Japanese bank stocks in danger of sinking back to those mid-August lows, if not lower.
Share price performance in the April-September 2019 1st Half of the FY3/2020 fiscal year showed negative returns across the Japanese banking sector for all but a handful of largely-illiquid small banks. October starts with an increase in Japanese consumption tax to 10%, and may end with Britain crashing out of the EU with no deal whatsoever. If investors move to ‘risk off’, with global markets overshadowed by concerns that the global economy may be teetering on recession as the US-China ‘trade war’ continues, we expect the Yen to strengthen as part of a ‘flight to safety’: not good for Japanese bank stocks generally.
The rise in consumption tax is a risky move for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, as past increases have been followed by a collapse in consumer spending. Any attempts by the Bank of Japan to head off an economic slowdown by resorting to more quantitative easing spells bad news for the embattled Japanese banks, especially the regionals and secondary regionals which remain overly-reliant on interest income. It is all looking rather unpleasant. Caveat Emptor! (May the Buyer Beware) remains our advice to would-be investors in Japanese bank stocks in 2019.

The stock went to market at a unit price of 0.97 SGD and was recently traded at 0.53 SGD. If we include the dividends received since the IPO (0.2387 SGD) the 'real' adjusted price is still only 0.76 SGD.In the past we have attended several management meetings and the 2017 company AGM but were disappointed on multiple occasions by management that either 1) did not care, 2) did not know how or 3) was held back by other corporate Japanese factors from creating shareholder value.Over the last six months several new developments are potentially creating a cocktail that could finally create sustained value for AGT unitholders:<ul>
<li>Appointment of new CFO who assures investors no repeat of “membership deposit debacle”</li>
<li>New five-year funding secured from two lenders</li>
<li>MBK Partners buys ORIX Golf Management</li>
<li>Value investor Hibiki Path Advisors buys 6.2% of the company</li>
<li>Clear focus on acquisitions and using its balance sheet strength</li>
</ul>With its 2019 financial year ending in March, investors can be hopeful that its dividend in FY20 can grow to a minimum of 5 SGD cents suggesting a yield of 9.5%. If management injects assets a higher DPU is possible.

Accordia Golf Trust (AGT SP) has not been a great success story since its IPO in August 2014. The stock went to market at a unit price of 0.97 SGD and was recently traded at 0.53 SGD. Hokuhoku Financial Group, Inc. is a holding company, which manages financial operations for its subsidiaries.  As a financial group, the Company provides general banking services including deposits, loans, and foreign exchange transactions.  The Group also provides other financial services such as leasing and credit cards.

Kyushu Financial Group, Inc. is a holding company established through the merger of Higo Bank and Kagoshima Bank.  The Bank provides banking services such as deposits, loans, and exchange transactions.  Kyushu Financial Group also provides other financial services including security brokerage, credit cards, leasing, and letters of credit.

Nishi-Nippon Financial Holding Inc. is a holding company established through the merger of The Nishi-Nippon City Bank, Limited, The Bank of Nagasaki, Ltd and Nishi Nippon Shinyo Hosho. The group manages the subsidiary companies and provides variety of financial services.

Suruga Bank Ltd. is a Shizuoka based regional bank mainly operating in the Kanto area (central eastern part of Japan) including Tokyo.  The Bank provides deposits, loans, and foreign exchange transactions.  The Suruga Bank also provides financial services such as leasing, letter of credit, and credit cards services.

The San-in Godo Bank, Ltd. is a regional bank mainly operating in Shimane and Tottori Prefectures.  The Bank offers banking services including deposits, loans, foreign exchange transactions, and securities brokerage.  The San-in Godo Bank also provides financial services such as leasing, credit cards, letter of credit, invests in venture capital, and develops software.

North Pacific Bank, Ltd. is the surviving company through the merger of Sapporo Hokuyo Holdings. The company provides banking services including deposits, loans, foreign currency transactions, trust banking, and securities investments.

Trustmark Corporation is the holding company for Trustmark National Bank. The Bank offers a variety of banking, investment, and insurance solutions to corporate, institutional, and individual customers in Mississippi and Tennessee.

Tisco Financial Group Pcl is a bank holding company.
