Last week, the Straits Times Index (“STI”) marginally declined 0.1%, trimming the July-to-date total return to 1.6% and the 2019-to-date total return to 12.3%. With the local market driven largely driven by global factors this year, the benchmark’s total return is in-line with the FTSE ASEAN All Share Index which gained 11.4% in the 2019-to-date.

The STI is highly diversified across sectors and geographical reach of the 30 constituents.  This was exemplified by the varied performances of the most active stocks by turnover last week.

While the STI marginally declined 0.1% last week, the top 40 stocks by turnover saw diversified performances ranging from an 8.0% gain for AEM Holdings to a 5.3% decline for Yangzijiang Shipbuilding. This brought their respective 2019 year to date total returns of those two stocks to 50.8% and 19.2%.

<li>On 25 July, AEM Holdings announced that as of that day it had received sales orders worth S$255 million for delivery in FY19. In terms of financial guidance for FY19, management also revised upwards the revenue range to be between S$265 million and S$280 million, and its CAPEX range remains at S$4 million to S$7 million. 	<li>Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (Holdings) has continued on a course to both diversify and streamline its business.  After the 19 July close, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding announced the disposal of interest in the subsidiary - Nanjing Saiyang Equity Investment Enterprise. This was on the grounds the move would streamline the structure of the Group and to control the overall administrative expenses – click <a href="https://links.sgx.com/1.0.0/corporate-announcements/NEZOGTIGXLJE15BG/37836b2e68ef820c73be95a9890f8c8bcb840ba941597add4c0a3835349e770a">here</a> for more.
