Ramifications of the 2020 US presidential election, 15 months away, will be global.  Diverse outcomes are possible given the breadth of the Democratic Party’s field of potential candidates and the unpredictability of the anachronistic electoral‑college system.  Two gruelling primary debates, spread over four nights and involving more than 20 putative nominees, marked a major first hurdle.  New polling in recent days shows former Vice President Joe Biden retaining frontrunner status, despite lackluster debate performances.  Incessant attacks from rivals appear to have left him unscathed.  In effect, the debates left the field virtually unchanged.  Despite his shortcomings, Biden brings stature and swing‑state appeal – in both the ‘rustbelt’ and the ‘sunbelt’.  Having first attempted a presidential run in the 1980s, he may finally succeed in 2020 – but first he must withstand a ‘two‑front war’ in the approach to early 2020 primaries in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.  For investors in Asia, Biden stands out as one of the few potential presidential contenders who at least acknowledges the merits of pursuing free trade.
