BACKGROUND
I have 20+yrs experience in Asia doing alternative strategies (i.e. non-delta1 non long-only) in fixed income, equity derivatives, and activist/catalyst/event-driven and long-short equity strategies with most of that time spent managing money. 

4 years in fixed income macro, 8 years running internal hedge fund and 4yrs investment banking at Citi in Japan, 3 years running an Asia multi-strat portfolio at a hedge fund, 4+yrs as an independent special situations analyst.

Really.Relative value traders have long looked at <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/589" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:589">Dah Sing Financial Holdings</a> (440 HK, DSFH) which owns 74.59% of <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/342" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:342">Dah Sing Banking Group Ltd</a> (2356 HK, DSBG) - one of the few remaining 'independent' banking institutions in Hong Kong after Chong Hing and Wing Hang have been taken over in the past few years and looked at the possibility of an unwind of the holdco structure. This evening, Bloomberg carried a very sparse article titled "Dah Sing Financial Said to Weigh Sale of Life Insurance Business" suggesting a pricetag of "more than $1 billion."There is more interest than just that headline. If this news has legs (i.e. it is real), depending on the resulting structure, there could be something like a double in this.Recent holdco valuation trading ranges, possibly spurious inferences but possibly a really interesting setup, and much more below the fold.
