Bright Scholar’s H1/20-21 earnings remain weaker than expected, as the overseas schools (particularly in the UK) remained heavily impacted by pandemic-related lockdown measures. Moreover, the ongoing travel restrictions have prevented Mainland students from enrolling in the company's overseas schools. In addition, the US-China conflict could dampen the attractiveness of having an overseas education among Mainland students. Positively, the company's financial profile remains strong, with a net cash position (excluding lease liabilities). We continue to view negatively Bright Scholar's use of short-term debt to fund carry-trade investments in related-party securities, which deviates from its core business. Moreover, the ROI appears to be unsatisfactory, given the relatively high interest cost of its USD bonds.
