<li>At its IR Day today, Seven &amp; I  confirmed what has become a mantra inside the company: become the most efficient fresh food retail network in the world. </li>
<li>Fresh food and takeout will form the basis of expansion of CVS globally and CVS/mini supermarkets in Japan, a format differentiated from the competition and so allowing for new growth.</li>
<li>Fresh food also means higher sales per day and higher gross/operating profit margins. The plan again demonstrates that creating new value in retail takes time and is in the detail.</li>

<li>The bigger news was the plan to hive off the non-CVS retail operations into a new company, York Holdings, leaving a newly named 7-Eleven Corporation running CVS globally.</li>
<li>Unusually, Seven also mentioned the possibility of new strategic partners investing in York, including even the "original founding families", suggesting one way of holding on to control.</li>

<li>We remain sceptical about a bid – if it happens – succeeding. Either way, Seven &amp; Eleven Japan looks to be the much better retailer.</li>
<li>It has been selling 25-40% more than competitors in the world's toughest CVS market and looks set to extract more value in Japan/overseas than anyone else could so why sell?</li>
</ul>
