Our process begins by organizing the universe of actively traded stocks into discrete sectors, then into industry groups. We then apply our technical and quantitative tools to identify developing price trends. Once attractive trends are identified within a selected sector or group, we screen for individual stocks which we believe offer the best risk/reward profile. We provide a historical perspective that often reveals, through our long-term charts, how price patterns often repeat themselves over time.

Technical Analysis

This market continues to be dominated by signals that suggest we are in the early stages of a new bull phase, which we discuss below. At the same time, small-caps continue to be one area of the market that gives us some reason for pause as neither the Russell 2000 or S&amp;P Small Cap 600 indexes have been able to make bullish price or RS inflections. In today’s report we highlight attractive Groups and stocks within Consumer Discretionary and Financials: Large- and Small-Cap Casinos &amp; Gaming , Banks, Super-Regional, and Asset Management &amp; Custody Banks, Large-Cap.

U.S. Equity Strategy: Waiting on Small-Caps

Encouraging developments continue to pour in. Over the past week we have seen dramatic improvements that could be setting the stage for a broad-based advance. U.S. Equity Strategy: Dramatic Improvement

Global equities (ACWI) and the equal-weighted S&amp;P 500 are attempting to break out for the fourth time this year from what has seemed like a never-ending horizontal consolidation period. At some point this consolidation will come to an end, however the weight of the evidence is not yet telling us “this time is different.” Despite some recent encouraging and positive developments from areas such as retail (XRT), EM (EEM), and European Banks (EUFN), we remain in wait-and-see mode as the market approaches resistance. In today's report we detail why we remain hesitant to call this a bull market along with what it would take to improve our outlook. We also highlight attractive Groups and stocks within Consumer Discretionary, Financials, and Materials: Retailers, Off-Price, Banks, Super-Regional, Construction Materials/Products, and Forest Products, Diversified.

Our outlook remains cautious as we continue to expect heightened volatility and a potential retest of the February 2018 lows over the next several weeks. Near-term we are monitoring for S&amp;P 500 support near 2,600 (i.e., the October low) and resistance near 2,817 or the 100- and 50-day moving averages. In today’s report we outline our current concerns along with developments that would cause us to become more constructive on the market. We also highlight attractive set ups within the Financials, Consumer Discretionary, and Health Care Sectors.

Our outlook remains cautious as we continue to expect heightened volatility and a potential retest of the February 2018 lows over the next several weeks. Financials, especially the large-cap brokers have suffered severe pullbacks recently. If these stocks cannot sustain a reversal in the next few days, we believe the markets could suffer a more severe pullback. Many of these names are suffering uptrend violations in price and RS, as well as bearish descending triangle patterns. The Sector is showing signs deteriorating breadth as well. In today’s report we highlight concerning charts within Financial Sector.

Financials, especially the large-cap brokers have suffered severe pullbacks recently. If these stocks cannot sustain a reversal in the next few days, we believe the markets could suffer a more severe pullback. Many of these names are suffering uptrend violations in price and RS, as well as bearish descending triangle patterns.
