Indian Rubber Prices Unchanged, Smallholders Cut Production

<ul><li>HighlightsProduction at 263,000 tons in five months up to August  Consumption in five months at 573,000 tons Import increases in five months by 32,983 tons Indian rubber production and consumption have registered single-digit growth in the five months of this fiscal (Apr 22 to Mar 23) leading to August 2022, while imports have gone up by double digits, signaling a revival in the market activity, including the downstream tire and automobile sectors that emerge from the pandemic.Domestic NR production for April to August 2022 is provisionally estimated by the Rubber Board at 263,000 tons, up 3.5% compared to 254,000 tons during the corresponding period last year.</li><li>Interventions of the Board in promoting rain guarding and other appropriate agronomic practices, reining in diseases, and adopting untapped areas contributed to the increase in production.Consumption of NR for April to August has been estimated at 573,000 tons compared to 524,000 tons during the same period the previous year, registering a growth of 9.4%.</li><li>The auto tire sector also reported an uptick of 5.4% from April to August, while the general rubber goods sector saw a 20.4% growth.</li></ul>

<ul><li>An increase in speculative selling was observed in the futures market for rubber in the past week, with prices across the board falling throughout the exchanges.</li><li>The price behaviour in the past week is shown to be in contrast to the slight bump in prices after the Chinese holidays in previous years.</li><li>Prices retraced most of the gains made in OSE over the last week, and fell lower than the fortnight before in SHFE/INE and in SGX.</li></ul>
