Since the TOPIX closing low of 1,236.34 on 16th March, the index has recovered by 27%. However, it has only been in the last ten trading days that the number of new two-year share price highs and lows has consistently been in double-digits.  This month has seen 136 new two-year lows and 214 new two-year highs. Whatever the impact of COVID-19 on earnings, the market is very clearly signalling its preferences for COVID 'Heroes &amp; Villains'. Since June 2020, the share price performance between Japanese cosmetics companies has diverged rather significantly. Among Japanese cosmetics names, <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/kose-corp" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:18009:1" rel="noopener">Kose Corp (4922 JP)</a> and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/pola-orbis-holdings-inc" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:2287:1" rel="noopener">Pola Orbis Holdings (4927 JP)</a> were the worst performers, as their share prices declined 13.5% and 15.8% respectively. Among Japanese cosmetics names, Kose Corp (4922 JP) and Pola Orbis Holdings (4927 JP) were the worst performers, as their share prices declined 13.5% and 15.8% respectively. During that time, Shiseido Company (4911 JP)’s, Kao Corp (4452 JP)’s and Fancl Corp (4921 JP)’s share prices declined 1.2%, 4.9% and 0.3% respectively.

Cosmetics is one of the industries, worst hit by the coronavirus pandemic. The industry was struggling for growth even before COVID-19. Due to the consumption tax increase, Japan’s domestic cosmetics market declined 0.6% year-on-year on average during Oct-2019 to Jan-2020. The rate of decline accelerated to 26% by April 2020 due to COVID-19.
However, the situation is much better outside of Japan. Total cosmetics exports grew 8% year-on-year in May 2020 as exports to China increased 49.8% year-on-year.
Below we analyse, Japan’s cosmetics industry using the monthly data released by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Ministry of Finance.


Japanese Cosmetics Industry Statistics- May 2020: China Recovers While Domestic Demand Deteriorates

<a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/shiseido-co-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:5718:1" rel="noopener">Shiseido Co Ltd (4911 JP)</a>, the biggest pureplay cosmetics company in Japan is generally the last cosmetics company to release its quarterly results.On 6th February 2020, Shiseido released its Q4 results and 2020 guidance. Revenue guidance was 0.4% above consensus as of 6th Feb while OP was 14.6% below consensus. About half of this OP difference is due to Shiseido’s CSR initiatives. The company has donated ¥165m as of Feb 2020 and it has also pledged 1% of sales from the Asian markets to the following initiatives:<ul>
<li>Donate to charity to support the restoration of daily lives.</li>
<li>Offer utility products from Shiseido Group to areas in need.</li>
<li>Offer various support to invigorate people through the power of beauty.</li>
</ul>Since Feb 6th guidance, consensus has adjusted its forecasts. The current 2020 revenue and OP estimates are 10.3% and 25.0% lower than company guidance.<a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/fancl-corp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Shiseido</a> is scheduled to release its 1Q20 results on 12th May 2020. In this Insight, we provide a preview of Shiseido’s Q1 results using METI and Ministry of Finance industry data for January and February.Consensus estimates revenue of ¥246.5bn and OP of ¥20.0bn for Q1. It implies a 9.9% and 48.6% year-on-year decline for revenue and OP respectively.However, our analysis of industry data suggests that Shiseido’s revenue will undershoot even the revised consensus estimate by about 4%.
