In this month’s “In-Focus” section, we provide an update to our 2018 analysis of returns and volatility for unrated Chinese issuers. Since our first report, the number of such issuers has increased notably. At the same time, with the Lucror Chinese Industrial index having run since 1 January 2018, we can now better compare the unrated issuers' performance relative to peers. The Asia Monthly focuses on providing updates on recent events, information on new issues and spread movements, as well as summarising our top picks, and discussing specific areas of interest in the “In-Focus” section. The Asia Monthly is intended to broaden investors' understanding of the Asian USD high-yield market.

Pan Brothers’ Q3 and 9M/20 earnings were within expectations. Positively, earnings growth was sustained even amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase in revenue from domestic sales more than compensated for the decline experienced by the company's historical global brands business, thanks to the switch to producing PPE. That said, Pan Brothers’ cash flow generation remained poor, and it continued to report large working capital outflows. Management's comments on the earnings call were slightly disappointing, in our view. We now see elevated risk of an eventual distressed exchange for the USD Notes maturing January 2022. It appears unlikely that Pan Brothers will be able to increase the size of its syndication facility, given the low commitment from banks at the moment. Moreover, only one out of the 12 syndication banks has expressed willingness to increase its loan exposure. We believe this leaves the company with few alternative sources of liquidity to address the USD bond maturity. We move to “Not Recommended” on the Notes, and revise our LARA to “Very High Risk” from “High Risk”.
