It offers consumers a wide selection of payment options on the Paytm app. It also offers merchants solutions that allow them to accept payments, acquire and retain consumers, improve their business operations and access financial services.The company clocked payment gross merchant value (GMV) of INR4tn (US$50bn) in FY21 for 114m transacting users during the year. Its users undertook a total of 7.4bn transactions in 2020. Along with its payment infrastructure, PayTM also runs a payment bank, in which it owns a 49% stake. The payment bank had a deposit base of INR52bn across 64m payment bank accounts.In this note we will talk about the positive aspects of the deal.

Google is reportedly close to acquiring smartphone settlements company Pring for ¥20-30bn which would open the door for it to offer a mobile payments service in Japan directly linked to bank accounts. And that is the appeal of Pring which is a relative minnow in the Japanese payments market with &lt;1mn users but has relationships with a wide range of Japanese financial institutions. Google is not a global fintech player but it has had some success in a few markets like the US and India whilst it has started to expand in Europe, and now apparently, Japan. Competitively, the major domestic players with vast consumer ecosystems are formidable competition but Google connects to half of all smartphone users through Android and has merchant relationships through its Internet advertising business.

By year-end we expect there will be two newly minted public fintech companies in Asia as IPOs for Kakao Pay (August) and PayTM (Q4-ish) move ahead. These are both potential comparables for Softbank Group’s PayPay of which Z Holdings is the leading shareholder. Comparatively, proposed valuations for Kakao Pay ($7-11bn) and PayTM ($24-25bn) are much higher but these are also later stage businesses with established track records and offer some insight into what PayPay can turn into over time. We currently value PayPay at its carry value of $500mn but as monetization starts, we expect management aspirations for a unicorn valuation can be reached. This report includes forecasts updated for Q4 results, guidance, and the acquisition of Yahoo trademark rights from Verizon.

Z Holdings (Buy) - Asian Fintech App IPOs Highlight Potential PayPay Upside

Softbank will be able to report a positive Q1 contribution from public companies in the Vision Fund portfolio thanks to five new listings and some amazing quarter-end moves for Dingdong Maicai, Full Truck Alliance and Coupang. All in, we estimate public VF companies ended the quarter up $1.1bn after mid-quarter losses that had been as high as $12bn. New listings were a big help surfacing almost $6bn in value, enough to offset c. $5bn in valuation losses for the existing portfolio. It is worth noting that the underlying value of Softbank shares is at all-time highs as VF liquidity offsets recent Alibaba weakness. That is less apparent in the share price as the discount has expanded to 45% from &lt;30% when the company announced its full-year results in May.
