Since the TOPIX closing low of 1,236.34 on 16th March, the index has recovered by 27%. However, it has only been in the last ten trading days that the number of new two-year share price highs and lows has consistently been in double-digits.  This month has seen 136 new two-year lows and 214 new two-year highs. Whatever the impact of COVID-19 on earnings, the market is very clearly signalling its preferences for COVID 'Heroes &amp; Villains'. The IHS Markit Composite PMI data (sponsored by au Jibun Bank) shown above is already below the trough of 2009 and expectations suggest that the manufacturing output indicator will follow Services into the "20s" next month. They have asked companies to 'cease operations' from tomorrow until 6th May. Parking lots at tourist attractions are being closed, and flower buds are being culled in parks and nature reserves. The closure of national highway routes is also being discussed. Many pachinko parlours are defying the government's request to cease operations. They may now be subjected to 'naming and shaming' - a tactic complicated by the over-representation of Korean ethnic minorities in the industry.<strong> Japan's current strategy risks falling between its twin objectives of limiting the damage to the economy while avoiding 'overshoot' in the medical system. The former forecasts are often prepared and reviewed at a lower 'level' in the company than the latter, which are seen as 'targets' set by the CEO. As a result and as seen last year, the interim forecasts provide better forward guidance, a pattern that is beginning to repeat this year as seen in our scoring above. </p><p>In the <strong>DETAIL</strong> below, we shall review the results, revisions and initial forecast announcements made yesterday.  The positive/neutral/negative balance for the 16 results was 9:0:7; and for the 17 revisions/forecasts, the split was 12:0:5, with three of the twelve 'positives' being in the Information Technology Sector. <p>The results, as always, are interesting, with some baskets clearly outperforming others. If you take the view that more liquid parents vis-à-vis less liquid subs will either underperform or outperform during these unprecedented times, the answer is not always clear cut, from one country to the next. </p>

Of the 32 larger-cap companies reporting results, seven saw year-on-year declines in their quarterly OP of greater than 25%, while three - <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/nec-corp" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:17084:1" rel="noopener">NEC (6701 JP)</a>, <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/cyberagent-inc" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:8197:1" rel="noopener">CyberAgent(4751 JP)</a>, and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/valuecommerce-co-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:7970:1" rel="noopener">ValueCommerce (2491 JP)</a> grew profits by more than 25%, with the last of the three showing the strongest revenue growth. <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/omron-corp" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:15904:1" rel="noopener">Omron (6645 JP)</a> saw sales fall by 23%. Our market composite cap-weighted Results Score declined by 8bps to 0.99</p><p><strong>FORECASTS</strong> - <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/canon-inc" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:1:1" rel="noopener">Canon (7751 JP)</a> released the most optimistic forecasts and account for the 24bps uptick in our Forecast/Revision Score; however, in terms of OP the FY2020 forecast is the same as the FY2016 actual result which was the second-worst outcome in the last decade after FY2019.
