<p style="text-align: center;"><strong>• RELATIVE PRICE SCORE •</strong></p><p><strong>RELATIVE PRICE SCORE OUTLIERS</strong> - The<strong> Relative Price Score (RPS)</strong> is a measure of price performance relative to TOPIX calculated by comparing the current deviation with the mean absolute deviation of monthly and daily relative share prices over the last 28 years and 24 months, respectively. As all companies are put on a comparable scale, <strong>'Overbought'</strong> and<strong> 'Oversold'</strong> outliers and short-term changes in scoring can reveal attractive trading opportunities.</p><div>
<p>The data for all <strong>3,860</strong><strong>Companies</strong> is cap-weight-aggregated into Relative Price Scores for our <strong>328</strong><strong>Peer Groups</strong> and <strong>30 Sectors</strong>. The Overbought and Oversold outlier 'thresholds are set' at +4 &amp; -2 for Companies, +3 &amp; -1.5 for Peer Groups and +2 and -1 for Sectors, respectively. These thresholds equate with the top and bottom percentiles of historical observations.</p>
<p>With a few exceptions, mean reversion from these extreme outlying states occurs typically in a matter of weeks or months. It often coincides with the peak of market interest in a theme or investment fashion.</p>

This insight updates our list of overbought and oversold companies, reviews the best and worst performing companies by RPS over the last two months and adds some specific comments on stocks on each category.</p>
<p><strong>RPS STATISTICS</strong> - The Company 'outlier' thresholds are set to "+4" for overbought and "-2" for oversold.  Currently, of the 3,686 listed companies for which monthly data is available, 91 companies are 'Overbought', and 120 are 'Oversold' - 2.5% and 3.2%, respectively of the total. For companies with a market capitalisation of over ¥100b, there are 35 'Overbought' and 24 'Oversold' companies. </p>
<p><strong>RPS 'TOPS'</strong> - In the last two years, 445 companies have achieved an RPS of '4' or more. 80% have seen their RPS fall to below '4' within the following two months. For companies with a market capitalisation higher than ¥100b, the numbers are 95 companies and 63% - demonstrating the superior persistence of large capitalisation companies in this regard. Japan: Most Overbought and Oversold - Relative Price Score Update - Companies

<p>If a Japanese regional bank were independent, profitable, and had the leading market share for loans and deposits in its home prefecture, why would management choose to ignore its relationships with other local banks that were significant shareholders and instead actively pursue a course of self-annihilation through seeking a merger with a rival bank group?  With a rival bank group, moreover, based in another prefecture entirely and with no previous relationship history such as through cross-shareholding or business co-operation?  That is exactly the path that <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/11060" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:11060:1">Eighteenth Bank (8396 JP)</a> from Nagasaki Prefecture has chosen in pursuing a merger with the much larger <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/3712" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:3712:1">Fukuoka Financial Group (8354 JP)</a> from Fukuoka Prefecture. The Japan Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has finally given its blessing to the union, and the share price has reacted very positively to the news (Eighteenth Bank’s stock price jumped 7.7% on Friday, trading over 1 million shares and closing at ¥350).  At a time when Japanese bank stocks have been under considerable pressure for most of this year, with many regional bank stocks falling around 15% or more in the last six months, Eighteenth Bank has bucked the trend.  Its stock price has risen 19% in the last six months, and by 32.6% over the last 12 months: the best price performance of any Japanese bank stock.  Even so, investors would be wise to consider Eighteenth Bank’s motives in pursuing this merger and whether such actions are in its shareholders’ ultimate best interests.</p>

If a Japanese regional bank were independent, profitable, and had the leading market share for loans and deposits in its home prefecture, why would management choose to ignore its relationships with other local banks that were significant shareholders and instead actively pursue a course of self-annihilation through seeking a merger with a rival bank group?  With a rival bank group, moreover, based in another prefecture entirely and with no previous relationship history such as through cross-shareholding or business co-operation?  That is exactly the path that Eighteenth Bank (8396 JP) from Nagasaki Prefecture has chosen in pursuing a merger with the much larger Fukuoka Financial Group (8354 JP) from Fukuoka Prefecture. The Japan Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has finally given its blessing to the union, and the share price has reacted very positively to the news (Eighteenth Bank’s stock price jumped 7.7% on Friday, trading over 1 million shares and closing at ¥350).  At a time when Japanese bank stocks have been under considerable pressure for most of this year, with many regional bank stocks falling around 15% or more in the last six months, Eighteenth Bank has bucked the trend.  Its stock price has risen 19% in the last six months, and by 32.6% over the last 12 months: the best price performance of any Japanese bank stock.  Even so, investors would be wise to consider Eighteenth Bank’s motives in pursuing this merger and whether such actions are in its shareholders’ ultimate best interests.
