Our classification overlaps with the TOPIX-33 Information &amp; Communication sub-Sector but is broader in that it encompasses all companies listed on all sections and exchanges but is also narrower in that we have excluded Telecommunications (including <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/315" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:315:1">S</a><a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/315" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:315:1">oftbank Group (9984 JP)</a>) and Information Technology companies. We have adopted a 'quantamental' approach which covers the long-term and current trends for Japan's Internet Sector as a whole, as well as eight sub-Sectors or Peer Groups and the Sectors' leading companies by market capitalisation.  Our focus is exclusively on the locally-listed universe and is based on disclosed financial and market data. We do not provide any forecasts, other than the companies' own forecasts and we do not attempt to make any business model or strategic judgments. Our focus is purely on financial and market performance. Although Internet Sector revenues have grown steadily and now account for close to 1% of the total for all listed companies, operating margins have declined by half in the last seven years and are now only four percentage points higher than the market average. Accordingly, as measured by our Results &amp; Revision Score, the Sector is close to a twelve-year low. The market's response is an unchanged Sector weight in the market composite despite the addition of 111 new companies in the last six years, and a Relative Price Score that has moved in a narrow range over that period. The Sector averages disguise the weak business and market performance of a handful of Sector leaders as well as the overvaluation of the Sector's more successful business models, which is partly a result of a lack of alternatives. Despite the world's most significant Internet investor - <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/315" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:315:1">Softbank Group (9984 JP)</a>'s Vision Fund - being based in Japan, this fund and other global investors in Internet business have been right to give Japan a 'pass'.

The market composite rose by 15% from the Christmas Day low, peaking on 26th February at ¥659t. The market-value-based percentage above moving averages reached a five-month on Friday. REITs,Restaurants, Healthcare, Transportation, and Utilities continue from our previous review with Other Commercial Products replacing Information Technology. Equally predictable is the bottom half-dozen - Banks, Non-Bank Finance, Autos, Retail, and Metals remain from two weeks ago, with Energy replacing Construction. With the Yen having broken the ¥110 level against the US dollar on Friday, we would expect the Autos, Machinery, Electrical Equipment, Technology Hardware, and Chemicals sectors to weaken further as indicated by their Negative Crossover percentages. <hr>- COMPANIES -COMPANY MOVING AVERAGE OUTLIERS - As with the Market Composite and Sectors, the Moving Average Outlier indicator uses a weighted sum of each company's share price relative to its 5-day, 20-day, 60-day, 120-day and 240-day moving averages. 'Extreme' values are weighted sums greater than 100% and less than -100%. We would caution that this indicator is best used for timing shorter-term reversals and, in many cases, higher highs and lower lows will be seen. <div class="content-highlight">

Our most extreme positive outlier two weeks ago, <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/2709" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:2709:1">AnGes (4563 JP)</a> is still the most extreme large cap positive outlier and gained a further 8% over the fortnight. We recommend taking short-term profits.
In the same sector <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/21001" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:21001:1">Eisai (4523 JP)</a> is the most extreme negative outlier after falling by 16.6% on Friday on the discontinuation of the clinical phase 3 trials of Biogen's Alzheimer's treatment Aducanumab as the primary endpoint is unlikely to be reached. Now at an eight-month Relative Price Score low, a short-term recovery to above ¥8,000 is likely.

🇯🇵 Japan: Moving Average Outliers - Market Sell Signal Generated + 6920, 8036, 6758, 2326, 3064

</div>LIQUIDITY RULES - Despite the continuous stream of negative macroeconomic news from Japan and other economies, financial liquidity trends are the strongest in over two years, and much of this 'boom' is flowing into risk assets. Large-scale repatriation of offshore funds by US companies has also helped boost the US dollar against the yen. The Market Composite responded by rising 2.3% over the last two weeks, although only by 1% in US dollar terms.WEAK MACRO - Net exports and higher inventories offset private investment and consumption during the fourth quarter, resulting in flat GDP growth year-on-year. January industrial production fell to the lowest level in 30 months, and, with the manufacturing PMI nearing 50, the prospect is for further weakness this quarter. Inventories continue to rise and, in North Asia, to levels last seen in 2005. TUMBLING DICE - After <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/18379" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:18379:1">ZOZO (3092 JP)</a> (-52%) and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/27149" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:27149:1">Mercari (4385 JP)</a> (-50%), <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/8197" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:8197:1">CyberAgent (4751 JP)</a> is the worst-performing large-cap Internet stock in Japan over the last seven months.  The company is the sector's leading foreigner-held stock with over 48% (60%+ of the float) held by institutional investors such as Baillie Gifford (11.9%), JP Morgan AM (6.9%), Tybourne Capital (5.1%) and Blackrock Japan (5.0%). Having outperformed the sector and the market annually over the last nine years by 38% and 25%, respectively, over the seven months since the stock peaked in terms of our Relative Price Score on 13th July, CyberAgent shares have declined by 56%, underperforming the market by 48% and the sector by 37%.

On September 5th Nikkei Inc. announced that CyberAgent would replace <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/19521" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:19521:1">Furukawa (5715 JP)</a> in the Nikkei 225 index, with the inclusion occurring on October 1st. Since the ¥6050 intraday peak of the week before inclusion in the index, the shares have declined by 49% in 90 trading days.

SUMMARY - CyberAgent's business has three 'pillars', internet advertising, mobile gaming software, and media. The latter now includes the linear free-to-view AbemaTV business, which helped drive the share price to a post-listing high of ¥6930 in July 2018. Since then, business conditions for two of these 'pillars' have degraded significantly,  while the fledgeling TV business remains in 'up-front' investment mode. To cap what will be a turbulent year for CyberAgent, the company is moving into a new head office building in Shibuya called 'Abema Towers' in March. We shall refrain from making any analogies to the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skyscraper_Index" target="_blank">Skyscraper Index</a>.

VISION SHIFT? - In previous years, CyberAgent had a clear vision statement - 'To create the 21st century's leading company'. The company's recent performance has led to a change of tone, and CyberAgent is now rather more modestly just 'Aiming to be a company with medium to long-term supporters'.  In the vein of the lyrics from the best song on the best Rolling Stones album, Exile on Main Street, the business has recently been at 'all sixes and sevens and nines'. In the search for new 'supporters', we encourage CyberAgent to just 'keep on rolling', letting the dice fall where they may.

TUMBLING DICE - After ZOZO (3092 JP) (-52%) and Mercari (4385 JP) (-50%), CyberAgent (4751 JP) is the worst-performing large-cap Internet stock in Japan over the last seven months.  The company is the sector's leading foreigner-held stock with over 48% (60%+ of the float) held by institutional investors such as Baillie Gifford (11.9%), JP Morgan AM (6.9%), Tybourne Capital (5.1%) and Blackrock Japan (5.0%). SUMMARY - CyberAgent's business has three 'pillars', internet advertising, mobile gaming software, and media. The latter now includes the linear free-to-view AbemaTV business, which helped drive the share price to a post-listing high of ¥6930 in July 2018. Since then, business conditions for two of these 'pillars' have degraded significantly,  while the fledgeling TV business remains in 'up-front' investment mode. To cap what will be a turbulent year for CyberAgent, the company is moving into a new head office building in Shibuya called 'Abema Towers' in March. We shall refrain from making any analogies to the Skyscraper Index.

VISION SHIFT? - In previous years, CyberAgent had a clear vision statement - 'To create the 21st century's leading company'. The company's recent performance has led to a change of tone, and CyberAgent is now rather more modestly just 'Aiming to be a company with medium to long-term supporters'.  In the vein of the lyrics from the best song on the best Rolling Stones album, Exile on Main Street, the business has recently been at 'all sixes and sevens and nines'. In the search for new 'supporters', we encourage CyberAgent to just 'keep on rolling', letting the dice fall where they may.

In the three months to December, MonotaRO's domestic (parent company) sales continued to grow at an annual rate close to 25%, indicating that full-year consolidated results should be close to management's guidance and our own estimates. This also suggests that our 18% sales growth forecast for 2019 could be conservative.  Parent company data for December show sales up 18.4% year-on-year  in nominal terms, but up 24.6% when adjusted for the number of working days in the month. The figures for November were 27.3% growth in nominal terms, but 21.3% adjusted.In the three months to December, adjusted sales were up 24.2%, a slight improvement from 23.9% growth in 3Q. In FY Dec-18 as a whole, reported parent company sales were up 24.4% to ¥105.3 billion, slightly exceeding management's ¥104.1 billion guidance. At ¥2,523 (Friday, January 11, close), the shares have dropped 25% since October. They  are now selling at 61x our EPS estimate for FY Dec-18, 54x our estimate for FY Dec-19 and 47x our estimate for FY Dec-20. Price/sales multiples for the same three years are 5.7x, 4.8x and 4.2x.Consolidated results for FY Dec-18 are due to be announced by the end of January. <div class="content-highlight">MonotaRO is the only pure-play e-commerce MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operation) investment in the Japanese stock market. With over 10,000 SKUs (stock keeping units - i.e., individual items, including gloves, hand and power tools, hardware, painting supplies, etc.) for sale to construction companies, manufacturers, auto repair shops and other customers, the company is both driving and benefitting from the growth of Japan's B2B MRO market. Overseas subsidiaries in South Korea, Indonesia and China, which account for about 4% of consolidated sales, are not yet profitable.</div>
