Fifteen companies revised their forecasts, and one - <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/imv-corp" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:14159:1" rel="noopener">IMV (7760 JP)</a> withdrew its forecast entirely. In terms of our scoring system, the ratio of positive to negative 'scores' was 6:10, with <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/jfe-holdings-inc" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:210:1" rel="noopener">JFE (5411 JP)</a> being the largest negative-scoring company. Our cash flow model is derived from the disclosed Balance Sheets and Statements of Comprehensive Income and balances to zero for every company for every comparable period. Variations in disclosure between the audited annual yuho and unaudited quarterly kessan tanshin reports, notably when the company is reporting under the weaker IFRS standard can result in unavoidable quarter-to-quarter variations. Consequently, our analysis will focus on year-on-year changes as of the most recent quarterly disclosure irrespective of fiscal year-end.  Our review will cover six principal cash flow metrics:-<ul>

Toshiba's cash balance has declined by ¥1.4 trillion since peaking in 2019-Q2 - 114% of the current market cap. 70% of the cash generated between 2018-Q4 and 2019-Q2 has been allocated to share repurchases, dividends and cash reduction. The company's net cash remains at a healthy 51% of market value and 43% of Shareholders' Equity; however, Cumulative Operating Cash Flow will fall below zero in the current quarter. There are few additional reductions in Fixed Assets and Inventories that can be sustained without irreparable damage. The logic of buying back shares in an entity that has negative residual returns is not clear to us. Despite the potential for a TOPIX re-inclusion 'bounce', fundamentally the stock should be avoided.<div class="content-highlight">In the DETAIL Section below, we shall look at the top (or bottom) thirty large-cap companies on each of the metric above scaled by market capitalisation. </div>

Imagine a sell-side analyst calls. You ignore it, of course, and the voicemail goes like this:

Sounds absurd, doesn't it?
There's a very good reason for that.
The truth is, ESG information doesn't drive stock prices.
I'm not saying ESG performance isn’t accretive to long-term value; often it is. Rather, I am saying that ESG informational events don't have nearly the same sway as their financial equivalents.
Financial information – about profits, losses, mergers, write-downs, upgrades, downgrades, and CFOs pursuing other interests – has a direct and immediate impact on securities prices.
ESG information, on the other hand, creeps into valuations circuitously.
By definition as non-financial data, ESG is always one or more degrees of separation from what really matters. ESG must impact financial metrics before manifesting, indirectly in prices.
Put another way, ESG isn't value in and of itself; it's a catalyst for value.
It's not all rain on the parade though. Some ESG events do move prices. Additionally, as the quality and timeliness of ESG data continues to improve, markets will absorb it with increasing efficiency.
This topic, how ESG information is assimilated into stock prices, is so pertinent to ESG Alpha – the core leitmotif of my research – that I will address it as a quasi-series, starting with this report.
Rather than kick this off with a buzz kill (hint: ESG scores/ratings are lousy predictors of price), I'm starting with a kind of ESG information event that affects stocks materially in the here-and-now.
Fat-tail hitting-the-fan Enron-esque ESG-related news.
Herein, I analyze a few recent ESG events that make the cut as statistically-significant in terms of inferred causality – and a few that surprisingly don't. Though not a complete list, here are a few:

LOWER LOW - Japanese equities reached a new 52-week low on 29th October but rebounded on the subsequent four trading days to close the fortnight down 2.2% - 3.6% below its 50-day moving average. From peak to trough, Total Market Value declined by 16% and 18% in Yen and US$ terms, respectively. The Value Traded Ratio spiked to its 4th-highest point this year, the number of 52-week new lows reached a two-year high and the Toraku advance-decline indicator an eighteen-month low. All of these indicators suggest that we have seen an intermediate-term market low. OUTLOOK - With now one-third of this quarter's results and revision announcements having been made, the outlook is far more muted. Of the 1,493 results released since 22nd September, 53% have been positive in terms of Results Score and 55% regarding Revision Score. However, the average scores are now declining.  So far companies have forgone two opportunities (the Q1 and now the Q2 results) to address the 3% 'shortfall' between TTM and FY19 Forecast Net Income. Forecasts for Operating Income in six months' time are also not seeing the customary mid-year uptick. In such circumstances, the fact that the market's PER multiple is at a three-year low of 13.7x should not be considered a mitigating factor. Having broken down and out of a nine-month trading range, and as noted in more detail <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/insights/japan-market-update-oversold-however" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="insights:25370">here</a>, a decisive low has yet to be reached. 
SECTOR RECOMMENDATIONS - Although we maintain a cautious outlook, we will reduce our implied net short in terms of our sector selection (see below) and revert to our standard 6-long 6-short recommendations from last month's 5/9 ratio.

LOWER LOW - Japanese equities reached a new 52-week low on 29th October but rebounded on the subsequent four trading days to close the fortnight down 2.2% - 3.6% below its 50-day moving average. From peak to trough, Total Market Value declined by 16% and 18% in Yen and US$ terms, respectively. The Value Traded Ratio spiked to its 4th-highest point this year, the number of 52-week new lows reached a two-year high and the Toraku advance-decline indicator an eighteen-month low. All of these indicators suggest that we have seen an intermediate-term market low. The drivers of the downward revision were not new - smartphone and semiconductor related demand, but the speed of deceleration was faster than we expected.Nevertheless, the market was way ahead of analysts with the stock down 48% since its Jan peak. As is our tendency, we were a little "early" calling the end of short-term underperformance in mid Jul, just as we were "early" calling the end of outperformance in late Oct last year but with a lot of the bad news now out and the company's excessive valuation premium having corrected we feel it would be the wrong time to become overly negative on the stock.
