<p>Silver Life is in a prime spot within Japan’s ageing demographic space providing meal kits to franchisees who often add rice and deliver the meals to elderly customers. The company also provides prepared ingredients to nursing facilities and supplies frozen bentos as an OEM. At its IPO in late 2017 which we covered <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/insights/silver-life-ipo-aging-society-pure-play-to-usher-in-the-age-of-demographics" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a> the stock jumped 74% and continued rising thereafter to peak 490% above the IPO price in Sep 2018. Since then, however, it has fallen 40% and is just recovering from the COVID selloff and trading at 35.5x consensus PE. Now the company is an attractive bet on Japan’s ageing population and priced as such, but what makes the company truly interesting is its CEO. We explain why below.</p>

Of all listed companies, one-third by market value are currently unable to see ahead twelve months and only 16% by value and 23% by number are prepared to look forward four-and-a-half months. In last week's two reporting days, aggregate trailing operating income declined by ¥400 billion, while the current year forecast was trimmed by ¥800 billion. The respective numbers for net income were ¥600 billion and ¥200 billion - the latter being flattering in its 'deception' as the figure includes three net-income 'heavy' sogo-shosha. <p>Keyence reported FY numbers in line with consensus as OP of ¥277.6bn was marginally above consensus’ ¥277.0bn. Revenue was more encouraging as the ¥551.8bn result was 0.8% above consensus’ ¥547.5bn. OP was hurt by increased SG&amp;A expenses. A slight encouragement was an effective increase in the dividend as Keyence maintained its ¥100 payout despite the Nov 21 stock split, effectively increasing the dividend from ¥200 to ¥300 (on pre-split like for like) and forecasting ¥400 for this year (¥200 post-split). Of course, this could still be increased but it is a step in the right direction and implies a payout ratio that will probably be over 20% this year. That is not high, but it is better than what you might imagine given Keyence’s miserly reputation.</p>

Of the 82 companies announcing annual results, only 22 made forecasts for the current year, while <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/shimano-inc" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:3777:1" rel="noopener">Shimano (7309 JP)</a> withdrew its FY2020 forecast.
