US equities closed in the green after three days of losses with the S&amp;P and Nasdaq up 0.3% and 0.7%. Utilities led the gains by ending 1.1% higher with most sectors ending positive, while Financials were down 0.6% despite JPMorgan’s strong earnings (scroll below for details). US 10Y Treasury yields eased 3bp to 1.55%. European stocks were also higher with the DAX, CAC and FTSE up 0.7%, 0.8% and 0.2% respectively. Brazil’s Bovespa ended 1.1% higher. In the Middle East, UAE’s ADX was flat and Saudi TASI was up 0.7%. Asian markets are broadly mixed with Shanghai and STI flat while Nikkei was up 1%. HSI remains closed. US IG and HY CDS spreads tightened 0.9bp and 4.1bp respectively. EU Main CDS spreads were flat and Crossover CDS spreads tightened 2.2bp. Asia ex-Japan CDS spreads tightened by 0.6bp.

*For Sale: According to press reports, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (8306.JP) [MUFG] is contemplating a sale of its US banking subsidiary, MUFG Americas – the 22nd largest bank in the US by assets, in a significant strategy shift;  and  *Don’t Expect A Big Premium: Bloomberg suggests that the median sale price for large US banks was approximately 1.4x P/BV last year – implying a deal price of over USD 22 bn. In addition to the price tag limiting the number of potential suitors, any acquirer will have to contend with breaching the national deposit cap. As such, pricing likely would below last year’s US average – particularly considering MUFG America’s fundamental challenges.

Two days ago the U.K. Financial Reporting Council announced 125 successful signatories (aka "not greenwashers") to the revised U.K. Stewardship Code. Signatories are integrating stewardship and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) factors into investment decisions, to high standards.Whilst this is ostensibly limited to U.K. pension assets, ramifications are more far-reaching than it might at first appear (one indication is the number of North American and Asia Pacific signatories, in addition to the expected European names). More specifically, the broad relevance is because it:<ul>
<li>Affects firms doing business with U.K. asset managers/owners not just the managers/owners.</li>
<li>Is a quasi-blueprint for similar anti-greenwashing initiatives taking root in the U.S. and Asia.</li>
<li>Greenwashing is having an increasing impact on stocks prices (e.g., DWS Group last month).</li>
</ul>This is one battle in an emerging global war on greenwashing. The U.S. SEC has its own agenda to fight greenwashing and Asia isn't far behind (e.g., regulators in Japan stepping up scrutiny). There is more to come, and a lot to learn from this including who is (and is not) on the signatory list.
