Volume and value sales of consumer appliances in India increased strongly in 2016. The fact that monsoon conditions were better in 2016 [and that most Indians still depend on agriculture to make a living] resulted in an increase in disposable incomes in rural areas and a consequent rise in demand for consumer appliances. Furthermore, the number of players in the consumer appliances industry is increasing. To sustain increasing competition, manufacturers are expected to cut prices during the forecast period.

This wave of American isolationism is in stark contrast to the openness projected by China in recent weeks; China is poised to become increasingly influential in Asia.</li><li>While existing TPP members can forge ahead and implement some sort of a TPP-lite deal without the US, countries may not be willing to open up politically sensitive sectors without commensurate economic returns that is access to the large US market.</li><li>Export-oriented Asian economies could find it pragmatic and beneficial to establish closer economic ties with China and accept closer geostrategic relations too. The Union Budget 2017-2018 announced on February 1, was labelled the “Modi Stimulus” by CNBC TV-18, the leading English business TV channel in India, and the stock market duly responded with a sharp spurt. A stimulus, however, is supposed to revive demand and employment, improve capacity utilisation and trigger private sector capital expenditure. An examination of the budget numbers reveals that this budget is no different than earlier budgets with its single-minded focus on austerity to satisfy international credit rating agencies. The results also would be the same – stagnant employment, sluggish growth and slack private capital investment.
