The unprecedented BJP victory in India’s most populous state will consolidate its position in the 2019 national elections as it has maintained its vote banks cultivated in the 2014 national elections, in this large, complex state, resulting in a smooth continuum of economic policies backed by global capital. As a result, the Indian stock market is likely to surge as political opposition to the BJP would wane and the passing of legislation may be swifter and the BJP can be more aggressive on its economic agenda claiming overwhelming popular support. Populist measures, if any,  are likely to be fiscal deficit-neutral, whether by weeding out ‘undeserving’ beneficiaries, or by raising donations from the corporate sector, or by phasing out other populist schemes. However, the economic and corporate slowdown is unlikely to improve, as policies which contract aggregate demand remain in place. Since coming to power, the BJP has bowed down to the demands of global capital for fiscal austerity and that takes precedence over the popular mandate.
