<ul><li>Two recent developments have dominated Australia's political landscape: the passing of the Commonwealth Electoral Amendment (CEA) Bill 2016 which reduces the prospects of a hostile Senate after the next federal election (slated for the second half of the year), and the publication of the book <em>The </em><em>Road To Ruin - How Tony Abbott And Peta Credlin Destroyed Their Own Government , </em>by political columnist Ms Nikki Savva, which traces the demise of the former PM, Mr Tony Abbott.</li><li>Ms Savva draws attention to just how dysfunctional the Abbott government had become, in large part because his Chief of Staff centralised power and the Prime Minister's Office was unwilling to consult and collaborate with many Ministers on key policy priorities. </li><li>The electoral law reforms, passed last week, reduce the chances that the cross-benchers or micro-parties will hold the balance of power in the Senate going forward.  The prospect of a less hostile Senate should help to enhance the authority and mandate of the government of the day.  Nonetheless, the whoever is elected PM will need to articulate an economic narrative for the country that pushes the case for structural reforms to boost productivity growth and address the wedge between growth in government spending and tax revenue. <span id="yui_3_17_2_4_1458438609519_13309">This would go some way to restoring community trust and investor confidence in Australia's political culture after being at a cross-roads for almost a decade.  </span></li></ul>

Greg Gibbs has spent his working life of more than 26 years in financial markets, beginning in 1989 at the Reserve Bank of Australia, after completing a Bachelor of Economics Degree (Honours) at the Australian National University. He has been a CFA Charterholder since 2005. He has worked in Sydney, Singapore, New York and London for major global banks and presented on foreign exchange markets to major financial institutions and companies around the world, and maintained a high profile in the financial media.
