<ul><li>The political power struggle in China is intensifying and increasing the possibility of politicisation of economic policy. In short, political risks may well be higher than expected.</li><li>President Xi is strengthening his position and his recent political moves suggest that his grip on power is so secure that he can move to crush prevailing threats from the Communist Youth League (CYL) faction. </li><li>Xi's power will see his opponents lie low and allow him to gain a level of dominance not seen since Mao Zedong's days. </li><li>Xi’s dominance will also result in important implications for the economy. His personal ideological preferences are unclear, but the increasing emphasis on learning Marxism and the role of the SOEs rather than private enterprises point to a leader who is not going to move further in the direction of a market-based economy.</li></ul>
