Our process begins by organizing the universe of actively traded stocks into discrete sectors, then into industry groups. We then apply our technical and quantitative tools to identify developing price trends. Once attractive trends are identified within a selected sector or group, we screen for individual stocks which we believe offer the best risk/reward profile. We provide a historical perspective that often reveals, through our long-term charts, how price patterns often repeat themselves over time.

Our visits in Hong Kong this last week had a very uniform theme of HK-China continuing to come off from over-bought positions. Views from seasoned investors with 20-40 years experience were quite uniform. China is in a correction mode which began several months ago, and which picked up downside momentum last week.Our visits were divided into two categories: 1) PM and direct investment, including CEOs; and 2) Ship owners. Our shipping meetings will be updated under separate cover.

The Chinese stock market continues to sell off, and is along with the Philippine bourse the worst performing in Asia this year. Investors are nervous.  Each week the US trade war on China escalates further and now the PBOC has cut reserve requirements again. We see few signs of the domestic economy losing momentum or Chinese policy makers panicking though. We are still overweight Chinese equities. Our advice to value investors with duration is to steer away from export cyclicals to domestic stocks.

China is the one bearing the brunt in the near term but there are also uncertainties that could alleviate the situation. It also appears that China has shifted its focus to domestic issues while preparing a long-term dispute with the US.
