The China equity index futures market has come a long way since index futures started to trade on the <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/shanghai-shenzhen-csi-300-index" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:22906:1" rel="noopener">Shanghai Shenzhen CSI 300 Index (SHSZ300 INDEX)</a> in 2010. There have been booms and busts, volumes and open interest have soared and plummeted, rules have been relaxed and tightened and relaxed again, and the market continues to move forward.Currently, index futures trade on the <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/shanghai-shenzhen-csi-300-index" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:22906:1" rel="noopener">Shanghai Shenzhen CSI 300 Index (SHSZ300 INDEX)</a>, the CSI500 Index, and the <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/shanghai-stock-exchange-sse-50-a-share-index" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:31073:1" rel="noopener">SSE50 Index (SSE50 INDEX)</a>. There are no published statistics on the share of volume and open interest held by institutional and non-institutional investors, so we take a stab at trying to figure out broadly what it could be.Our analysis indicates that till mid 2015, most of the volume traded was driven by retail investors and they held a lions share of open interest too. Post the market crash and subsequent resurgence, retail investors share of volume traded and open interest has likely dropped substantially due to the market entry of more institutional investors, proprietary trading shops, and quant traders. Strategies employed by non-institutional investors mainly run counter to the retail flow and that has dampened the futures basis in the recent past.

<div>Markets are now overdone on a short term basis and once again kissing the topside of the SPX rising wedge where we are selling some risk and layering into protection.</div><div>
 Bull momentum call to push toward the rising resistance at the top of the wedge near 2,930 but with time translation would shift right/up toward 3,940. Bet is to lock in some long gains into this zone and put on a few shorts for a minor pullback ahead of a fresh rally into late Feb. The directional bet is to buy equities on weakness (given SPX 3,800 holds) for a bigger cycle peak due in late Feb. Late Feb peak would usher in a harder corrective cycle into late March but let's see how the late Feb timeline unfolds first.</div><div></div><div>Spaces to short are outlined with entry, stops and PT's. We like buying our bull group again on a pullback into late February.</div>

On 22 December 2020 post market close, Hang Seng Indexes (HSIL) released the consultation paper on the "Proposal to enhance the <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/hong-kong-hang-seng-index" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:22899:1" rel="noopener">Hong Kong Hang Seng Index (HSI INDEX)</a> as regards continuing to serve as the most representative and important benchmark of the Hong Kong stock market". Market participants had until 24 January to submit their views to HSIL.HSIL are scheduled to announce the changes to the <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/hong-kong-hang-seng-index" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:22899:1" rel="noopener">Hong Kong Hang Seng Index (HSI INDEX)</a> as a part of the March review on 26 February. There is a high probability that the conclusions of the market consultation will be announced on the same day.Given some large new listings since then and the price movements on the stocks, we refresh our list of potential inclusions and exclusions assuming that HSIL go up to 65 names or 80 names.In both cases, the turnover is very high in percentage terms and in dollar terms. HSIL will need to implement the changes over 1 year.We continue to believe that the market will probably be fine with increasing the number of constituents to 65, but will likely balk at going up to 80 in one shot.Financials would see the largest decrease in weight, offset by gains in Information Technology, Consumer Discretionary, Properties, Healthcare, Consumer Staples and Utilities.
