We provide research and consultancy on Asian banks. Our focus is on what we call “Asian bank research, without the noise.” We are interested in the most critical swing-factors for banks, the NPL and credit cycle, and where we believe there is a gap between perception and reality. We often focus on the less studied components of bank financial statements.  Our research is highly thematic, sometimes examining unlisted banks and companies as a window on mainstream banks. 

Being independent allows us to look at smaller banks, often overlooked by others. Analysis of BIS bank guidelines in the context of Asia, is also a focal point, while we also analyze global banks operating in the region. We use what we believe is the most comprehensive, reliable financials database, SNL Financial. S&P Capital IQ augments our database, with corporate data and CEIC, with economics.

Technical Analysis

In last Tuesday’s Compass (10/27/20) we noted the S&amp;P 500’s break below 3425 short-term support opened the door for potential visits to 3325 and 3200. *Solid Results In FY 2Q21: Kotak Mahindra Bank (KMB.IN) [Kotak] reported a fairly stellar FY 2Q21 earnings result of INR 21.8 bn – exceeding FY 1Q21 results by INR 9.3 bn or 75.5% - a high quality beat of consensus as well; and*Strong Credit Metrics Across The Board: Gross NPLs were flattish linked quarter, while net new NPLs increased just INR 1.1 bn or 7.6% on an annualized basis. Further, despite the loss provisioning decline of INR 5.9 bn (61.7%), loss reserves at KMB increased INR 2.8 bn (7.4%) as NCOs continue to decelerate.

As a result, our outlook remains bullish.  In this report we show some love to various Sectors that have not been big attention-grabbers for us in recent months, but still have plenty of attractive stocks. The stocks highlighted hail from a variety of countries. Sectors covered include Services, Communications, Staples, Financials, and Utilities.

Vietnam Technological & Commer / Equity Bottom-Up

* Head Start On Economic Return to Normalcy: Vietnam Technological and Commercial Bank (TCB.VN) [Techcombank] is a long-term winner in the Vietnamese banking sector. Techcombank is Vietnam's largest joint stock bank by operating income and PBT – remaining the country’s most profitable bank from an ROA perspective despite having only a 3% deposit market share. Techombank is also the leader in mortgage, bancassurance, credit cards, and investment banking;  * Sector Credit Risks Are High: As we review each bank individually we continue to find that net new NPL growth ranges between 50%-150% per annum over the past five years through 2019 – despite the stated NPL figure declining on a growthy loan portfolio and placement of problem loans below the line. In our view, Vietnam has essentially done very little to address its legacy NPLs - which we estimate to be over USD 50 bn or 20% of total loans – and the SBV’s newly adopted “extend and pretend” policy will be substantially additive to the current heap of problem assets even if not labelled such; and* Capital Pressures Rising: With almost no end in sight to the growth of net new NPLs (doubling every year), and capital requirements under Basel II being extremely difficult to attain/maintain without prospects of capital raise or shrinking their balance sheets, commercial banks are set to continue to struggle to grow. The draft amendments to a Decree for tax payment deferral and the SBV’s request not to pay a cash dividend confirms Basel II compliance pressures.
