Tabbush Report

We provide research and consultancy on Asian banks. Our focus is on what we call “Asian bank research, without the noise.” We are interested in the most critical swing-factors for banks, the NPL and credit cycle, and where we believe there is a gap between perception and reality. We often focus on the less studied components of bank financial statements.  Our research is highly thematic, sometimes examining unlisted banks and companies as a window on mainstream banks. 

Being independent allows us to look at smaller banks, often overlooked by others. Analysis of BIS bank guidelines in the context of Asia, is also a focal point, while we also analyze global banks operating in the region. We use what we believe is the most comprehensive, reliable financials database, SNL Financial. S&P Capital IQ augments our database, with corporate data and CEIC, with economics.

<li>New weekly data for large US banks show risk aversion remains, with rising cash, but also dismal growth in loans at only 0.5% YoY in the most recent week. </li>
<li>Large time deposits continue to rise substantially at +110% YoY in most recent week, with cash rising too - the outlook for core net interest income is worsening.</li>
</ul>


New data for US PMI shows a continued weak economy, which is not positive for bank lending prospects or for loan pricing. It is also not positive for credit metrics. 
New weekly data for large US banks show risk aversion remains, with rising cash, but also dismal growth in loans at only 0.5% YoY in the most recent week. 
Large time deposits continue to rise substantially at +110% YoY in most recent week, with cash rising too - the outlook for core net interest income is worsening.


US Banks - Weekly Balance Sheets Show Risk Aversion Remains, New PMI Data Continues to Be Weak

<li>There was one week of data where large US banks showed -0.1% YoY growth in commercial and industrial (C&amp;I) but the most recent week is -1.0% so more solidly negative.</li>
<li>Cash balances continue to show YoY growth at double digit, now at 18.4% suggesting limited demand, and still banks having risk-aversion.</li>
<li>Jumbo time deposit growth remains extraordinary at 118% YoY in most recent week, and this money is more expensive than other time deposits.</li>
</ul>

The Bank attracts deposits from the general public and uses those funds to originate a variety of commercial and consumer loans. Prosperity Bank operates in the greater Houston metropolitan area and neighboring counties in Texas.

BOK Financial Corporation is a multi-bank holding company.  The Banks provide a range of deposit products, loans, and other financial services to businesses and consumers through offices and the Internet.  BOK also offers trust services, electronic funds transfer services, online insurance, and other online services.

Popular, Inc. is a bank holding company that provides commercial banking services through branches in Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, and the United States mainland. The Company also provides mortgage and consumer finance, lease financing, investment banking, broker and dealer activities, retail financial services, and automated tellers.

Zions Bancorporation is a bank holding company that operates full-service banking offices in western United States. The Company also offers an array of investment, mortgage, insurance, and electronic commerce services.  In addition, Zions provides financing solutions for small businesses across the United States.

Synovus Financial Corp. is a financial services holding company that provides various financial services.  The Company, through its subsidiaries, provides commercial and retail banking, as well as investment services, to customers in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Florida and Tennessee.

Western Alliance Bancorp is a multi-bank holding company.  The Company provides a full range of banking and related services to businesses and consumers in Nevada, Arizona, and California.

Webster Financial Corporation is a bank holding company. The Company's banking subsidiary provides a wide range of financial services to individuals, families, and businesses throughout southern New England and eastern New York State. Webster provides business and consumer banking, mortgage lending, financial planning, trust and investment services, as well as Internet banking.

Old National Bancorp is a multi-bank holding company operating in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee.  The Banks provide commercial and consumer loans, originate and service mortgage loans, issue and service credit cards, offer various deposit products, and provide alternative investments and brokerage services.

Bangkok Bank Public Company Limited provides various banking and financial services including commercial, consumer, credit card, and mortgage lending, international trade financing, investment banking, and securities services.

Kasikornbank Public Company Limited provides commercial banking services including personal and commercial banking, international trade, as well as investment banking services, to its customers throughout Thailand.  The Bank has foreign branches in Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Cayman Islands, and Shenzhen; and representative offices in Shanghai, Beijing, and Kunmin.

Krung Thai Bank Public Company Limited is a state-owned commercial bank offering various banking and financial services including commercial, consumer, credit card, and mortgage loans, as well as provident fund management, foreign exchange, and international trade financing services.  The Bank is majority owned by the Financial Institutions Development Fund.
