*Outclassed By US Counterparts:Goldman Sachs &amp; Co. (GS.US) [Goldman], in typically fashion, always to seems to have the best information at the earliest possible instance, and as a result were able to act early and decisively – coming through the Archegos liquidations thus far relatively unscathed.  Other prime brokers, including Credit Suisse Group (CSGN.VX) [Credit Suisse] which didn’t have close to the full Archegos Capital Management picture, were caught with their pants down in what was supposed to be an orderly unwind descended into chaos; and  *Capital Implications Are Significant At Credit Suisse:The problem for Credit Suisse is the potential peak level of losses that likely will cause it to breach regulatory triggers. Several factors must still be adjusted from consensus forecasts: CHF 2.0 bn from Greensill (not including Sanjeev Gupta/GFG’ Liberty Commodities insolvency filing); CHF 2.0 bn Mozambique debt scandal; and the potential CHF 7.0 bn Archegos exposure.  In addition, operational risk weightings/capital requirements are likely to increase. In aggregate, we find that Credit Suisse’s CET1 would decline to 10.8% against the likely increased CET1 target and intimates a potential capital raise, dividend cut, and share buyback suspension.

Putting S&amp;P over the edge was Credit Suisse’ exposure to Archegos Capital Management (Archegos) share liquidation as a result of margin calls whereby the bank is amongst the most exposed;  and*Ratings Agency Concerns: While Credit Suisse seems to be in competition with Deutsche Bank (DBK.GY) as the world’s most poorly managed bank, we find it incredulous that its actually S&amp;P calling out Credit Suisse for risk management. There are too many market participants have very little discipline, and to make matters worse, central banks have been all too happy to remove the moral hazard involved with excessive risk taking. In our view, the credit ratings agency model is permanently broken as waterfall risks in various corporates, rated pools and tranches have become increasingly significant with the markets unable to self-regulate and regulators either unable to regulate (or told not to regulate).

Executive Summary: The <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/credit-suisse-group-ag" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:22253:1" rel="noopener">Credit Suisse Group (CSGN VX)</a> requires between CHF4 to 8bn in additional Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) to remain competitive and bring its capital buffer in-line with peers. We noted several week ago that the firm’s capital buffer was too thin to absorb large losses while its Contingent Capital (CoCo) securities continued to trade rich relative to peers. The thin, and likely declining, buffer may now affect its ability to compete. In our view, the issue is quickly moving from damage control towards a capital raise.We derive our capital estimates by starting with the amount required to bring the CET1 buffer up to peer levels. To this we add various exceptional charges which are increasing every other week. Details within.We were ahead of the market with our Underweight recommendation on CS bonds. When we initiated this call, the CS 4.5% coupon 2030 callable Additional Tier 1 bond was trading close to par. It is now below $95. The flames are rising and more fuel could be added before the capital blanket is applied. As such, we believe CS’ bonds may continue to lag that of its peers.However, the Swiss regulator may be unwilling to wait for the smoke to dampen and the arrival of a new Board Chairman should create the opportunity to clear the air at Credit Suisse. Obviously in addition to raising equity, CS would need to take serious action concerning its risk management and tolerance. Risk tolerance needs to be reduced until risk management is improved as these are the embers which stated this fire. This should be beneficial to AT1 investors over the long-run.

*US Greensill Arm Declares BK: On March 25, 2021, Greensill filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for its US subsidiary, Greensill Capital Inc. (GCI), in the Southern District of New York. GCI sold Greensill products in the US with revenue passing directly through to the Greensill in London; and*Watch Your Risk: Greensill allegedly has USD 5 bn in risk outstanding to GFG Alliance Group (GFG) – a company owned by Sanjeev Gupta, who appears to be at the center of this entire debacle. Credit Suisse, GAM Holdings (GAM.VX), Tokio Marine Holdings (8766.JP), SoftBank Group (9984.JP) amongst many others are likely to be further impacted given the growing uncertainties of Greensill and GFG Alliance.

That would be Emerging Market positive. Germany announced, then retracted, plans to institute a tougher lock-down over the Easter weekend. This raised fears that a third wave of Coronavirus cases could impact demand globally. This may have contributed to a flight to safety and increased bearish pressure across risk assets as investors re-assessed near term GDP expectations.Risk assets have been discounting an inflationary surge in growth ahead. However, as US Covid-19 cases rise and European vaccination programs lag, prospects for US Q1 and Q2 GDP are deteriorating by the day. Ironically, various supply-chain disruptions, which could negatively impact production in coming month, may slow growth more than it boosts inflation. This could also be Emerging Market positive.US Treasuries continued their sawtooth upwards pattern of declining then rising. Transitory and more permanent factors impacted US Treasury and risk-asset returns this week. Notably, real rates remained steady.Transitory effects included supply plus month-end and quarter-end rebalancing which put pressure on yields. More permanent factors likely included less draconian SLR exemption interpretations and possibly the economic demand impact of vaccine distribution difficulties as Covid-19 infections rise. Amongst Asia EM banks, India bank equity continued its underperformance while Thai banks remained relatively unchanged following notable banking-related announcements in each country.The decline in India’s bank shares exceeded others in Asia. The interest-on-interest accrual decision, and the valuation of Additional Tier 1 bond guidance by the Supreme Court and the Securities &amp; Exchange Board of India (SEBI), respectively, are particularly onerous and damaging to bank valuations.In Asia, short duration bank bonds outperformed although most bank notes generated total positive returns on Treasury price strength.  Liquidity in Turkish bank bonds dried-up as the fall-out from the unexpected firing of the Central Bank Governor last week.Market Outlook: The question for next week is how much portfolio re-balancing out of stocks and into bonds has already occurred. This normally would take place during the last week of the quarter. However, with month-end just before Easter market holidays, trading conditions may be relatively thin next week. As such, portfolio adjustments may have been pulled forward. From a risk asset perspective, it may be wise to jump back into the market before the quarter-end to get ahead of the pack. From 1 April, with the start of Japan’s fiscal year, Japanese investors are typically net buyers of risk assets over the following months. This adds to a seasonality affect that usually pushes risk assets higher while safe-haven securities retreat.
