The Biden-Harris administration recently announced four "Day One" priorities, the first of which is their COVID-19 response plan. COVID-19 response is first, because it is a prerequisite to economic recovery, which is the second of their four "Day One" priorities.Several investment themes are inherent in Biden's COVID-19 plan, some more direct and obvious than others. This Insight overviews more significant themes and their most representative stocks, in three sections (the first two will be expanded on in separate upcoming reports):<ol>

COVID-19 Testing: Testing is the largest, most tangible, nearest-term investment opportunity created by Biden's plan. An estimated US$75-100 billion for testing could be windfall for certain stocks, but not all. Selectivity is key, and timing is critical (related to vaccine development).</li>

Vaccine Delivery: Biden's plan emphasises vaccine manufacturing and delivery, versus vaccine development (Trump had allocated <a href="https://www.hhs.gov/coronavirus/explaining-operation-warp-speed/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">billions</a> to vaccine development companies). It is a chain to watch as it is likely to list at some point, with a target of ¥1 trillion sales by the end of the next decade.
Its success is also a worry for <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/aeon-co-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:3:1" rel="noopener">Aeon Co Ltd (8267 JP)</a>. Aeon has seen its share of food sales in the greater Tokyo region fall from 10.8% to 9.7%, overtaken by OK Super which increased from 8% to 10.9%, a jump of 2.9 points. Lopia is half the size of OK Super but has also grown from 1.2% to 2.9% in the same period, more than doubling its effective share. Aeon is <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/insights/new-aeon-style-format-shows-hope-for-aeon-s-core-business" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fighting back</a> but still does not compete on price.

Its timely and opportunistic move to redirect products to retail channels at promotional prices helped, especially given meat supply disruptions (following COVID-led processing plant shutdowns)  and a rise in meat prices in the US.
With the restaurant sector still in the doldrums, it is likely that demand from that segment will continue to be weak in the near term. This could continue to be offset by strong retail demand as beef prices in the US continue to scale up. We expect Beyond to break even at the operating level in 3Q even as it drives retail sales growth with promotional offers and discount prices in an attempt to entice first-time buyers. Although margins may be compressed in the near term, it could improve from 2Q lows that were depressed by one-off repackaging and other costs.
Beyond has made significant progress in expanding its retail presence both in the US and also in the International markets during this quarter when pandemic-led caution seems to have stimulated retail demand for alternative protein. The expanded reach and presence could help support long term demand and awareness amongst consumers. Revival in demand from the foodservice segment will be a key upside to lookout.

Ultimately, COVID-19 is holding the market hostage and it likely will stay that way until the virus spread diminishes.
