As Covid-19 continues to spread far and wide at a rapid pace (at least for now), merger spreads in the US have widened, and in some cases substantially. In the table below, we highlight the most 7 of the most extreme cases of merger transactions that were announced prior to February 20, 2020 when the S&amp;P 500 peaked, and where spreads have since ballooned to 40% or more in the current market meltdown. These 6 cases in our universe (AlphaSituations covers transactions in excess of $400 MN) have seen the average spread rise 12-fold from 5% as at February 20, 2020 (market peak) to 62% as of market close on March 20, 2020. All of these transactions have been targeted to complete by the end of 2Q 2020. We consider below whether the current crisis has justifiably increased transaction risk or created a profitable risk arbritrage opportunity with respect to these 10 cases listed in our table. Our assessment is that five of the six situations offer relatively low transaction risk even in the current environment, providing  a unique opportunity for outsized IRRs within a relatively short time horizon.
