The spread of COVID-19 and, to a lesser degree, the oil price war between Russia and Saudi Arabia overshadowed most other issues in March. These twin shocks are posing unprecedented challenges to the Asian HY market. Against this backdrop, we look at recent developments in China, where the pandemic began and where the economy seems to be returning to normal. We also evaluate the liquidity of each name in our coverage universe, in view of the uncertainties that prevail with respect to the macro and business-specific impact of the current situation. The Asia Monthly focuses on providing updates on recent events, information on new issues and spread movements, as well as summarising our top picks and discussing specific areas of interest in the â€œIn-Focusâ€‌ section. The Asia Monthly is intended to broaden investors' understanding of the Asian USD high-yield market.

Asia HY Monthly - COVID-19 And Oil Shock Update (March 2020) - Lucror Analytics

China Oil & Gas (COG) reported stable FY 2019 results. The core gas distribution segmentâ€™s performance remainedآ steady, with slight growth in revenue and operating profit. The main concern is the companyâ€™s small upstream O&G business in Canada. This segment accounted for 4% of FY 2019 revenue and 6% of operating profit. Overall, we expect the company to generate neutral FCF and maintain stable leverage.آ  According to management, COG is able to break even (from a production standpoint) at the current WTI price of c. USD 22/bbl. That said, we expect the segment to be loss-making after accounting for overheads. Moreover, the company may have to carry out asset impairments on its O&G reserves if the low oil price environment persists. During the earnings call, management commented that it is unlikely to divest the Canadian business, but it is also not planning for any expansion capexآ in 2020.
