<p>The valuation of pre-revenue biotechnology companies is, at best, an imprecise exercise. The traditional valuation tools (DCF, peer company comparisons, M&amp;A valuations) still apply, but require some modifications to reflect the unique circumstances. One tool is to consider the company's valuation in the context of the "step-up" from its last funding round to the pre-money valuation for the IPO. This Insight analyzes this data for pre-revenue biotechnology companies that have listed under the HKEX's "Biotech Chapter" and how investors can use this data to frame their analysis of these deals.</p>

<p>The first sector is <strong>Consumer</strong>, where H/A spreads widened on average 2.7% for the week, more than cancelling out the average 1.7% spread narrowing last week. With the exception of <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/hisense-home-appliances-group-co-ltd-h" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:20107:1" rel="noopener">Hisense Home Appliances Group Co., Ltd. H (921 HK)</a>, this happened as the H-shares rose strongly and the A-Shares rose even more strongly.  </p>
<p>Southbound investors through the Shenzhen-HK and Shanghai-HK Connect were significant net sellers during the week in both <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/tsingtao-brewery-co-ltd-h" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:1296:1" rel="noopener">Tsingtao Brewery Co Ltd H (168 HK)</a> and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/hisense-home-appliances-group-co-ltd-h" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:20107:1" rel="noopener">Hisense Home Appliances Group Co., Ltd. H (921 HK)</a> where the net selling activity amounted to 15.5% and 22% of volume respectively. </p>
<p>Hisense remains at the overbought end of the 52-week range. <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/great-wall-motor-co-ltd-cb302af9-398c-4d2d-ba39-023e43287eef" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:128:1" rel="noopener">Great Wall Motor (2333 HK)</a> and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/guangzhou-automobile-group-co-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:11082:1" rel="noopener">Guangzhou Automobile Group (2238 HK)</a> are now at 52-week wides. </p>

<p>Last week's recommendation was to take off Hisense and the H-share fell 7.3% while the spread widened 0.7%. It is still probably worth unwinding. At this point, Great Wall and Guangzhou are worth a buy on a spread basis.</p>

On average, 
The first sector is Consumer, where H/A spreads widened on average 2.7% for the week, more than cancelling out the average 1.7% spread narrowing last week. (1787 HK) and Ganfeng Lithium (1772 HK) are spreads at the relatively narrow end of their 52-week ranges, while Maanshan Iron &amp; Steel H (323 HK), BBMG Corp H (2009 HK), Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical (338 HK), and Anhui Conch Cement Co Ltd H (914 HK) are at the wider end of their 52-week ranges. The average spread in the sector widened somewhat dramatically in the month of August as seen on the chart, but stabilized at the beginning of September.

<p><a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/imax-china-holding-inc" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:888:1" rel="noopener">Imax China Holding (1970 HK)</a> is having difficulty due to the capacity constraint in the cinema despite a reopening relief that saw its ticket sales jumped multiple folds during the release of the nationalistic-themed <strong>The Eight Hundred</strong>. With the upcoming Golden Week, the company will benefit from a higher box office thus the share price will see some positive sentiment in the short term. </p>
<p>The issue remains until a vaccine is found; limited capacity and high fixed cost are the main issues that will be the deterrent for the stock price to go up. </p>
<p><strong>For long-only investors</strong> - the limited capacity coupled with the uncertain timing on the vaccine development may prolong the weak earnings, creating a weak long term story for the company. However, the upcoming Golden Week will provide a short term rally.</p>
<p><strong>For long-short investors</strong> - IMAX China's share price may not decrease by much but it will be an excellent relative value/pair against a long of <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/alibaba-pictures-group-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:20724:1" rel="noopener">Alibaba Pictures (1060 HK)</a> that is in the middle of transformation to produce reality shows in China. The ratio of long Alibaba Pictures and short iMax China has increased to 0.096 as of 16th September from 0.082 in mid of June 2020. </p>

The constituent changes will be effective from 7 September 2020 and the rebalancing trades will need to be done at the closing auction on 4 September 2020.</p><p>There are 32 inclusions and 23 exclusions for the Hang Seng Composite Index (HSCI). Although there are almost no assets indexed to the HSCI, the index forms the basis of stocks that are eligible for Southbound Stock Connect.
