<p>In this insight, we analyze the impact of <strong>market caps</strong> and <strong>share based compensation schemes</strong> on the 20 major Chinese IPOs so far in 2021. Some of the major Chinese IPOs that have been completed so far in 2021 include <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/beijing-kuaishou-technology-co-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:29725:1" rel="noopener">Kuaishou Technology (1024 HK)</a>, <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/jd-logistics" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:31500:1" rel="noopener">JD Logistics (2618 HK)</a>, and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/kanzhun-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:33368:1" rel="noopener">Kanzhun (BZ US)</a>.</p><p>These 20 IPOs currently have combined market caps of US$219 billion. Twelve of these IPOs are listed in HK and eight of them are listed in the US. Investors have been very selective in their pickings of Chinese IPOs this year unlike in 2020 when there was a much bullish sentiment. </p><div class="content-highlight">
<p><strong>Impact of Market Caps on Chinese IPOs in 2021 - </strong>The larger sized market cap Chinese IPOs have done much better as compared to the smaller market cap IPOs in 2021.</p>
<p><strong>Impact of Share Based Compensation Costs on Chinese IPOs in 2021 - </strong>Share based compensation expenses accounted for on average 9.9% of their total sales in 2019 and 2020. Among the 20 Chinese companies that completed their IPOs in 2021 above, we included 12 companies (see below) that provided specific breakdowns of their share based compensation costs in the past couple of years. On average, these 12 stocks returned 70.9% on their first day of trading after the IPO. This was higher than the average first day return of 28% for the remaining 8 companies. </p>

At the mid-point of the IPO price range, the net proceeds including the concurrent private placement are $257.3 million. </p>
<p>Soulgate will also raise an additional $89 million in a concurrent private placement with miHoYo. miHoYo was founded in 2012 by three Shanghai Jiaotong University graduate students. miHoYo is the creator of <em>Genshin Impact</em>, an open-world action role-playing game released in 2020, and one of the highest-grossing mobile games. It is not entirely clear if there are any near-term synergies through this investment. Currently, Soulgate's exposure to games is largely limited to its <em>Werewolf Rooms</em> (a subset of its <em>Animated Partyroom</em> app functionality) which enable users to play the popular board game <em>Werewolf</em>.</p>

<p>Didi Chuxing (Didi) is getting ready to complete its IPO in the coming weeks. The company claims to be the world's largest mobility technology platform in terms of annual active users and by average daily transactions for the 12 months ended March 2021. </p>
<p>Didi is the number player for shared mobility services in China including ride hailing, taxi hailing, chauffeur, hitch, and other forms of shared mobility. The company operates in 15 countries globally and its platform provides services to over 493 million active annual users and powered 41 million average daily transactions for 12 months ended March 31, 2021.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.ft.com/content/bb80e462-fbb9-49d1-8a87-b3ad511c1d4e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Didi Chuxing</a> was last valued at $65 billion in a 2018 fund raising round. Major investors in Didi include Softbank which has invested more than $10 billion in this company. Softbank's Vision Funds own a 21.5% stake in Didi Chuxing, followed by <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/uber-technologies-inc" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:430:1" rel="noopener">Uber (UBER US)</a> with a 12.8% stake, and <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/tencent-holdings-ltd" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:26:1" rel="noopener">Tencent (700 HK)</a> which has a 6.8% stake. </p>
