We initiate coverage of BAFS with a BUY rating, based on a target price of Bt40.0, which is derived from a DCF methodology (WACC 8.3%, terminal growth 1%) and implies 29.0xPE’19E.

Over the past 20 years, Thailand faced two financial crisis, namely Tom Yum Goong in 1997 and Lehman in 2008. Discounting the political nonsense that is just part of life down here, we think there are five important lessons to take away, regarding: 1) the importance of investors; 2) liabilities-cash flow matching; 3) sticking to core competencies as well as avoiding : 4) currency pegs to dollars (or any currency); and 5) capital controls. No event in Thai business history has transformed the landscape more than the 1997 crisis. In this review, we highlight a few anecdotes of those who survived and those who didn't (at least not in their original forms).

Five Biggest Lessons from Thai Financial Crisis

Government owned or quasi-state entities control a huge swathe of Thai corporate interest. In this review, we highlight PTT Group, the country's state oil company and arguably one of the largest industrial groups since it is the only one that regularly makes the Fortune 500. With interests spanning oil, gas, pipelines, refineries, and petrochems, some people claim it virtually controls the country's energy sector, and they wouldn't be too far off the mark. From humble beginnings of the Three Soldiers, PTT has taken on global giants like Shell and ExxonMobil and surprised the world with its ingenuity through the Amazon Coffee concept. On a stock basis, we would not really recommend any stock here, though there is still a little upside left for PTT, Thai Oil, and BAFS in our view.
