We provide research and consultancy on Asian banks. Our focus is on what we call “Asian bank research, without the noise.” We are interested in the most critical swing-factors for banks, the NPL and credit cycle, and where we believe there is a gap between perception and reality. We often focus on the less studied components of bank financial statements.  Our research is highly thematic, sometimes examining unlisted banks and companies as a window on mainstream banks. 

Being independent allows us to look at smaller banks, often overlooked by others. Analysis of BIS bank guidelines in the context of Asia, is also a focal point, while we also analyze global banks operating in the region. We use what we believe is the most comprehensive, reliable financials database, SNL Financial. S&P Capital IQ augments our database, with corporate data and CEIC, with economics.

Average loan growth for India's banks is now at unprecedented low levels: 0.3% as at December 2016 compared with March 2016. The figures have been coming down for some time, and suggest to that the cycle remains poor. Economists like to argue about loan growth begetting GDP growth, or GDP growth begetting loan growth; it’s probably a bit of both depending on where we are in the cycle. The new year has been unkind to Axis Bank, India’s third largest private sector bank. The waves of negative publicity following demonetisation, involving the arrest and suspension of its branch officials on money laundering in late December continued with the announcement of its results for the quarter ended December 31, 2016 (3QFY2017), when the bank reported a 73% yoy decline in net profit to Rs5,796 mn. Axis Bank’s problems are structural and the market is under-estimating the asset quality of its non-watchlist corporate and retail loans. Analysts appear unconcerned about the accountability of senior management and its pivotal role in the corporate asset and operational risk fiascos and instead assure their clients that earnings normalcy will seamlessly resume by March 31, 2019.  How the bank can recover from these major setbacks under the same unapologetic senior management remains a mystery.
