Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone / Credit

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone's (APSEZ) FY 2019-20 results were slightly weaker than expected, owing to a challenging Q4 amid the COVID-19 outbreak. The company’s earnings should continue to decline in Q1/20-21, with April cargo volumes already down 20-25% y-o-y, according to management. This was due to lower economic activity, as well as logistical challenges in dispatching cargo from its ports. The challenges could persist until the lockdown in India is fully lifted. Management opted not to provide earnings guidance for FY 2020-21. Positively, the company’s financial metrics remained healthy. The planned reduction in capex should also help APSEZ conserve cash. In addition, we view favourably the reduction in promoters’ share-pledged loans.
