The Bank of Japan has intervened on 42 of the 121 trading days since October 22nd or an average of 1.6 times a week as foreigners remain underweight. BAML has yet to call a Trough in their Global Wave and, were they to do so, such a Trough would be the first above '50' since 2006.<figure class="editor-figure mceNonEditable"><img src="https://static-prod.smartkarma.com/images/media/000/085/378/original/2019-04-20_14-00-43.png?1555736454" class="editor-image img-responsive" data-smartkarma-image-id="85378"></figure>FORECASTS LEADING EARNINGS LOWER - Separating our the Results Score and the Forecast &amp; Revision Score, the latter is continuing to lead the former to the downside, although both Scores are in aggregate still positive. Interim Forecasts are often prepared by the divisional heads are not accorded the same 'reverence' as the Annual Forecasts. As a result, the Interim numbers offer a good leading indicator of short-term trends. The acquisition of OMRON Automotive Electronics Co. Ltd., announced on April 16, should further Nidec's advance into vehicle electrification and augmented/autonomous driving, enhancing the growth potential that supports its relatively high valuations. The acquisition will also bring Nidec approximately 600 engineers, forestalling a looming shortage. Omron is reportedly selling because it cannot afford the investment required to remain competitive in automotive control equipment.OMRON Automotive Electronics makes electronic control units (ECUs) for auto body, chassis, transmission and motor control, power steering and other power control systems, remote keyless entry and other RF/LF products, switches and other components. These fit with Nidec's focus on electric power steering (EPS) motors, electric brake motors, electric vehicle (EV) traction motor systems, and electronic control units (ECU). The acquisition also offers synergies with Elesys, an ECU manufacturer acquired by Nidec in 2014, in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Nidec Elesys makes wave radar and camera-related products, while OMRON Automotive Electronics makes laser radar and driver monitoring systems.In FY Mar-18, Nidec, OMRON Automotive Electronics reported sales of ¥36.3 billion, recurring profit of ¥1.1 billion and net profit of ¥3.6 billion. The acquisition price, yet to be finalized, is expected to be about ¥100 billion. Given Nidec CEO Nagamori's reputation for driving a hard bargain, this does not seem particularly cheap, but the potential synergies and addition of a large number of experienced engineers indicate that it is not unreasonable.Nidec plans to announced FY Mar-19 results on April 23.

- RELATIVE PRICE SCORE - The Relative Price Score (RPS) is a measure of stock price performance relative to TOPIX calculated by comparing the current deviation with the mean absolute deviation of monthly and daily relative share prices. As all companies are put on a comparable scale, 'Overbought' and 'Oversold' outliers and changes in scoring can reveal short-term and longer-term trading opportunities. Company data is cap-weight-aggregated into 328 Peer Group and 30 Sector Relative Price Scores. Outlier thresholds are set at +4 &amp; -2 for Companies, +3 &amp; -1.5 for Peer Groups and +2 and -1 for Sectors. These thresholds equate with the top and bottom first-to-second percentiles of historical observations from which mean reversion normally takes only a few months.<figure class="editor-figure mceNonEditable"><img src="https://static-prod.smartkarma.com/images/media/000/083/923/original/2019-04-03_12-00-47.png?1554260470" class="editor-image img-responsive" data-smartkarma-image-id="83923"></figure><div style="text-align: center;" class="content-caption">Source: Japan Analytics</div>OUTLIER TRENDS - In the past, increases in the percentage of companies that are either Overbought or Oversold has been a useful indicator of market trends with a rising number of Overbought outliers being bullish and an increasing number of Oversold outliers being bearish and the crossovers between the numbers of each offering market timing signals.  The current situation where both sets of outliers are rising has only occurred once before in the last 30 years - in 1999/2000 shortly before the peak of the 'tech bubble'. We attribute some of the market's distortions to the Bank of Japan's market activities and the increase in algorithmic trading. Whatever the cause, repeating the 2000 tech bubble playbook is unlikely to end well. <figure class="editor-figure mceNonEditable"><img src="https://static-prod.smartkarma.com/images/media/000/083/924/original/2019-04-03_12-13-50.png?1554261675" class="editor-image img-responsive" data-smartkarma-image-id="83924"></figure><div class="content-caption">Source: Japan Analytics</div>NEGATIVE 'SPREAD' - On a daily closing basis, the Oversold outlier percentage is currently 3.17%, the highest since December 25th 2018, despite the total market value being 14% higher than on that day. The 'spread' between Overbought and Oversold outliers is now -1.10, and has only been wider for three days at the end of last year either side of Christmas Day. Nevertheless, the Overbought percentage reached a new fifteen-year high at the end of March despite the total market value being 12.6% below the peak of January 2018. The last signal was a sell on 18th December 2018 when the total market value was ¥623b, 4.5% below the current level. Both monthly and daily indicators have large negative 'spreads' and are unlikely to generate 'buy' signals for some time. Only seventeen Sectors have been Overbought during this period for a total of 546 months of which half were before 2001. The average Overbought persistence is 4.3 months or 3.4 months excluding the Internet Content &amp; Services Sector.  Only fourteen Sectors have been Oversold since 1992 for a total of 243 months of which 55% were before 2001. The average Oversold persistence is 5.7 months although this has risen to 7.5 months since 2001. Currently, three Sectors are Overbought - Consumer Services, Other Consumer Products, and Healthcare, and two Sectors are Oversold - Banks and Utilities.    In the DETAIL section below, we provide an update on recent Sector and Peer Group trends and make some specific recommendations. 🇯🇵 Japan • Relative Price Scores - Market, Sectors & Peer Groups > Extreme Negative Divergence

</div>LIQUIDITY RULES - Despite the continuous stream of negative macroeconomic news from Japan and other economies, financial liquidity trends are the strongest in over two years, and much of this 'boom' is flowing into risk assets. Large-scale repatriation of offshore funds by US companies has also helped boost the US dollar against the yen. The Market Composite responded by rising 2.3% over the last two weeks, although only by 1% in US dollar terms.WEAK MACRO - Net exports and higher inventories offset private investment and consumption during the fourth quarter, resulting in flat GDP growth year-on-year. January industrial production fell to the lowest level in 30 months, and, with the manufacturing PMI nearing 50, the prospect is for further weakness this quarter. Inventories continue to rise and, in North Asia, to levels last seen in 2005. The Value Traded ratio is below trend again, the RSI is neutral, and the Toraku is signalling caution. LIQUIDITY RULES - Despite the continuous stream of negative macroeconomic news from Japan and other economies, financial liquidity trends are the strongest in over two years, and much of this 'boom' is flowing into risk assets. Large-scale repatriation of offshore funds by US companies has also helped boost the US dollar against the yen. The Market Composite responded by rising 2.3% over the last two weeks, although only by 1% in US dollar terms.WEAK MACRO - Net exports and higher inventories offset private investment and consumption during the fourth quarter, resulting in flat GDP growth year-on-year. January industrial production fell to the lowest level in 30 months, and, with the manufacturing PMI nearing 50, the prospect is for further weakness this quarter. Inventories continue to rise and, in North Asia, to levels last seen in 2005. Combined with the sharp fall in exports in Japan, Korea and Taiwan, export pricing in back in deflationary territory, putting further upward pressure on real interest rates.  Meanwhile, January retail sales saw the largest month-on-month decline in over three years as department stores saw fewer Chinese tourists over the New Year.  Equity markets are living on 'borrowed time'.  Source: Japan AnalyticsHOLD FOR NOW - This bear market rally is two months old and is maturing. The Value Traded ratio is below trend again, the RSI is neutral, and the Toraku is signalling caution. We expect another month of liquidity/weak Yen-driven strength before the economic realities begin to prevail.MARKET/SECTOR STRATEGY- We continue to recommend an underweight position in Japan in global portfolios and favour undervalued domestically-orientated companies in the Information Technology, Internet, Media, Transportation, Healthcare and Telecommunications sectors.
