The spread of COVID-19 and, to a lesser degree, the oil price war between Russia and Saudi Arabia overshadowed most other issues in March. These twin shocks are posing unprecedented challenges to the Asian HY market. Against this backdrop, we look at recent developments in China, where the pandemic began and where the economy seems to be returning to normal. We also evaluate the liquidity of each name in our coverage universe, in view of the uncertainties that prevail with respect to the macro and business-specific impact of the current situation. Yanzhou Coalâ€™s FY 2019 results were soft on account of lower profitability across segments. That said, it is encouraging to see the very small (less than 2 ppts) drop in the gross margin for the key coal business, given that many other coal producers were much more adversely affected by the challenging conditions during the year. We note that coal prices in China were more stable than those in the seaborne market. Yanzhou'sآ financial risk profile deteriorated slightly, but liquidity remains adequate.
