The Semiconductor Industry Association in the US released the latest WSTS figures for January chip revenues.  Monthly revenues are down 15.6% from January of 2018.  While this is not a surprise to our clients it is frightening to those who anticipated that 2019 would be a continuation of the bonanza enjoyed in 2018.

It was reported last Thursday that <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/18703" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:18703:1">Denso Corp (6902 JP)</a> through its wholly-owned subsidiary NSITEXE, Inc. acquired a stake in quadric.io, a fabless semiconductor start-up company based in Burlingame, California. It seems that the company has begun its planned investments for 2019. Last year, Denso increased its stake (from 0.5% to 5%) in chipmaker- <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/entities/15933" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="entities:15933:1">Renesas Electronics (6723 JP)</a> to support its progress of ADAS and related technology. We also mentioned in our insight, <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/insights/denso-prepares-for-the-future-investments-in-tohoku-pioneer-eg-following-joled-and-thinci" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="insights:24005">Denso Prepares for the Future; Investments in Tohoku Pioneer EG Following JOLED and ThinCI</a>, that Denso has been making a series of investments to prepare itself for being the leading software solution provider alongside its hardware expertise, supporting its change in business model. Last year, NSITEXE invested in ThinCi, its partner, since 2016, in the development of a Data Flow Processor (DFP) designed to help autonomous vehicles make quick decisions in complicated and fast-evolving situations. Denso/NSITEXE's investment in quadric.io has a similar goal. The investment in quadric.io is said to help the start-up in its development of edge processing units (EPUs), which are high-performance semiconductors that could be used as a foundation for enabling automated driving technology.

SLOW &amp; STEADY RECOVERY - From December 25th's lows of 8% by number and 11% by value, the percentages of Japanese stocks above the weighted sum of moving averages have continued to recover to now 19% by number and 26% by value. Total Market Value has now risen by 11.2% from the Christmas Day low and is overdue a 'breather'.

NEW YEAR RALLY - From the December 25th's lows of 8% by number and 11% by value, the percentages of Japanese stocks above the weighted sum of moving averages have recovered to 14% by number and 20% by value - just on the 'buying zone' line. As we <a href="https://www.smartkarma.com/insights/japan-2018-market-review-bear-market-rally-ahead" target="_blank" data-smartkarma-citation="insights:26917">expected</a>, the Total Market Value has rallied 8.7% and looks to have some further to run, especially if the Yen reverses some of its recent strength. The Bank of Japan provided a 'helping hand' on both 4th and 10th January, the only days this year so far on which the market declined.

THE +/-100% CLUB - The number of extreme negative outliers reached a peak for 1,352 on December 25th and has since returned to 'normal' levels.
